HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team came up on the short end of a 2-0 pitcher's duel Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, falling to Sacred Heart in the opener of a three-game series.

Southeastern (7-5) dropped its third-straight game despite a career-high 13 strikeouts by junior right-hander Andro Cutura (2-1). Lion pitching combined to fan 18 batters against Sacred Heart (3-2), one shy of tying the team record. Pioneer pitchers fanned 15 hitters.

Sacred Heart took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Ted Shaw led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Zack Short drove him in with a single.

The Lions stranded seven runners over the next four innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

In the ninth, Sacred Heart added an insurance run. Keith Klebart doubled to right-center field to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to third by Kenny Byram. Southeastern brought Mason Klotz in from the bullpen. He walked Shaw, setting up a force, but a passed ball by Jameson Fisher allowed Klebart to score from third.

Cutura took the loss, his first of the season, despite allowing just one run in six innings of work. Kody Kerski (2-0) picked up the win and Jason Foley, with three shutout innings of relief, earned his second save of the season.

Saturday the Lions will send sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux (2-0, 1.50) to the mound against Sacred Heart left-hander Nick Leiningen (0-0, 5.40). Baseball-themed bingo will be available for play during the game
