Lions, Houston Baptist Split Baseball Doubleheader

Southeastern takes opener, 13-6

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana baseball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Houston Baptist, winning the first game, 13-6, before falling, 6-0, in the second game at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (16-10, 5-3 Southland) used two big innings in the opener to propel itself to victory, scoring four runs in the fifth inning and six more in the sixth. Trailing 4-1 heading into the fifth, Andrew Godbold's grand slam put the Lions on top for the first time in the game. Andro Cutura (4-1) earned the win while Matt Pittari, who worked the final three innings, earned his first save of the season.

HBU (13-10, 4-4 Southland) rode the arm of Ryan Lower (4-1) in the nightcap. He held the Lions to five hits over the course of eight shutout innings. Tate Scioneaux (5-1) suffered his first loss.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities (weather pending). Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.

Fans will also have a chance Sunday to enjoy the Raising Cane's Challenge. If the Lions score five or more runs in the game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).

Junior right-hander Kyle Keller (2-1, 2.73) draws the starting nod for Southeastern opposite Huskie junior righty Curtis Jones (1-1, 2.13).

Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 13, Houston Baptist 6
The Huskies built a 4-1 lead over Southeastern heading to the bottom of the fifth. HBU starting pitcher Taylor Wright (2-4) walked Jacob Williams to open the inning and then hit Sam Roberson. Jameson Fisher followed with a single to right, loading the bases for Godbold's second home run of the season.

In the sixth, the Lions sent 12 batters to the plate. Kennon Menard led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Jacob Seward. Williams singled to right, putting runners on the corners and chasing Wright from the game. Reliever Chris Garza gave up an RBI-single to Roberson before surrendering back-to-back walks to Fisher and Godbold (RBI). Reliever Brandon Hammerly hit Daniel Midyett with a pitch, forcing in a run, before Brett Hoffman chopped a fielder's choice grounder to the right side.

HBU first base Bradley Brown threw home, but the throw was in the dirt and Fisher scored easily. Hammerly then hit Kyle Cedotal with a pitch, forcing in another run. Reliever Ross Kennell picked up the second out of the inning on Menard's RBI sacrifice fly to left center.

Southeastern added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Game Two – Houston Baptist 6, Southeastern Louisiana 0
HBU scored the only runs it would need in the third. Right fielder Thomas Clay led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Three-consecutive singles by Josh Martinez, Curtis Jones and Brown drove in the first two runs.

The Huskies added single runs in the sixth and ninth, as well as a pair of runs in the seventh.

Southeastern threatened early. Roberson was stranded after a one-out double in the first and a pair of runners were caught stealing in the second.

Cedotal, Hoffman, Roberson, Seward and Williams produced hits for the Lions, who stranded six in the nightcap.
