HAMMOND – On the first day of the 2014 season, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic Friday at Chappapeela Park.
In the opener, Southeastern (1-1) blanked UMKC, 13-0, in five innings. Sophomore
Taylor Bishop (1-0) was dominant in the circle, scattering two hits in a complete game shutout effort.
Senior first baseman
Tori Sheppard led the Lady Lions at the plate in the win over UMKC, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Senior second baseman
Megan McCollum (3-for-3, 2 RBI), junior third baseman
Megan Moore (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and sophomore outfielder
Katie Lacour (2-for-4, 2 runs) each had multiple hits for Southeastern.
The Lady Lions struggled to get a timely hit in the nightcap, stranding 10 runners in an 11-3 loss to Texas Southern. Sheppard and freshman catcher
Lacey Fritz were the only Lady Lions to get a hit in the loss, while McCollum, senior outfielder
Jessie Browne and senior catcher
Caitlyn Fowler each had RBI.
Game One – Southeastern Louisiana 13, UMKC 0
Southeastern jumped out to a big lead versus UMKC pitcher Cinda Ramos (0-1) in the bottom of the first inning. Lacour led off the game with a bunt single and advanced to second after sophomore designated player
Amber Sather was hit by a pitch. One out later, Moore lined a single into left field to score Lacour.
After McCollum drew a walk to load the bases, Sheppard started off her final season in the green and gold with a bang, depositing a grand slam over the left centerfield fence to put Southeastern ahead, 5-0. McCollum furthered Southeastern's lead with a RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lady Lions added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior outfielder
Logane Fuselier and Lacour reached on infield singles, then freshman shortstop
Brittney Tschoepe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sather then drew a walk to force in the inning's first run. Browne and McCollum followed with RBI singles to give Southeastern a 9-0 lead.
Southeastern closed out its scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman pinch hitter
Mychal Truxillo reached on an error, Tschoepe walked and sophomore pinch hitter
Amanda Livaudais singled to load the bases. Browne then drew a walk to force in a run, which Moore followed with a two-run single. Sheppard later added an RBI single of her own to give the Lady Lions a 13-0 lead.
After allowing the first two batters to reach in the top of the first, Bishop was never threatened. The Sugar Land, Texas native struck out two and walked one in the shutout effort.
Game Two – Texas Southern 11, Southeastern Louisiana 3
Texas Southern jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, roughing up junior
Tori Stamper (0-1) in her Southeastern debut. Southeastern answered in the bottom half, scoring three runs without the benefit of the hit. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly by Browne. McCollum was hit with the bases loaded to force in another run and Fowler drew a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 4-3.
In the top of the second inning, a two-run home run by Thomasina Garza and two Southeastern errors allowed TSU to take a 9-3 lead. After freshman
Kasey Nielson threw two scoreless innings, TSU added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning on a home run by Krystalani Yockman.
Southeastern loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning on singles by Sheppard and Fritz, followed by a walk by sophomore outfielder
Amanda Livaudais. However, Madison Staton ended the game by forcing sophomore outfielder Sloane Jenkins to fly out to deep left.
