Lions Win Extra-Inning Thriller In Riser's Debut

Hoffman drives in pair with 10th-inning single

Box Score

RUSTON, La. – Brett Hoffman singled in a pair of runs in the 10th inning Friday as the Southeastern Louisiana baseball team picked up a 4-2 win over Louisiana Tech in Matt Riser's debut as the Lion's head coach at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

Southeastern (1-0), which had led since the second batter of the game, had to fight off a ninth-inning comeback by Tech (0-1). The Bulldogs scratched across an unearned run with two outs to force the extra frame.

Freshman Jacob Seward, who had gone in to play center field in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement, scored the eventual game-winning run after being hit by a pitch with one out in the 10th inning. Jesse Buratt singled with two outs and both runners took an extra base, putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Hoffman's heroics.

Mason Klotz (1-0) who had allowed an unearned run in the ninth, pitch a perfect 10th to earn the win. Tech tied the game on a bases-loaded walk following a pair of errors by Hoffman.

Southeastern's first run of the game was unearned as well. Junior left fielder Kiko Thompson smacked a ball up the middle, off the glove of Bulldog starter Phil Maton, reaching on the error. Thompson then stole second, moving to third on a throwing error by catcher Tyler Qualls. Sophomore first baseman Jameson Fisher plated Thompson with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Lions added a run in the third. Fisher singled with one out, moved to second when junior right fielder Andrew Godbold was hit by a pitch and scored from second on junior catcher Sam Roberson's single to center field.

Tech's first run came on a solo home run by right fielder Bre'shon Kimbell leading off the fifth inning against Lion starter Andro Cutura.

Despite the no-decision, Cutura was impressive in seven innings of work, allowing one run (earned) on six hits and one walk. The junior right-hander fanned eight. Senior right-hander Dylan Hills fanned all three batters he faced in the eighth, stranding an inherited runner.

The two teams return to the diamond for the second game in the season-opening, three-game series Saturday at 3 p.m. Sophomore Tate Scioneaux is slated to get the start for the Lions.
