LAKE CHARLES, La. – A solid effort Saturday has the Southeastern Louisiana University men's track and field team in third place after seven events at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Derek Hampton is the conference champion in the men's javelin throw, turning in a personal-best mark of 225 feet, 3 inches. It also earned the Lions 10 points in the standings.
Casey Revere earned another six, finishing third with a personal-best effort (210-00).
Southeastern earned 14 points in the men's shot put.
Jeffrey Milliron earned eight points, finishing second (54-03.75).
Jonathan Kinchen earned four points, finishing fifth (50-04.50). Freshman
Jimmy LeBlanc rounded it out with two points, finishing seventh (46-02.50).
Phillippe Moore and
Jerome Rudolph earned points in the men's long jump. Moore picked up four points, finishing fifth (23-09.00), while Rudolph earned a pair of points with a seventh-place finish (23-02.00).
Nia Stewart earned the Lady Lions four points in the women's long jump, finishing fifth (18-09.00). Freshman
Misha Frazier picked up five points with a fourth-place finish in the women's javelin throw (146-09), one spot ahead of teammate
Jenna Baker (144-11) who earned four.
In the women's shot put,
Shalicia Rochon placed third (46-06.75) and Frazier finished seventh with a personal-best mark (40-01.25). Rochon's effort earned the Lady Lions six points and Frazier earned a pair.
Southeastern also had several athletes qualify for Sunday's finals in the running events. In preliminary action,
Alicia Noel finished first in the women's 400-meter hurdles (1:00.55) and
Lindsey Toups finished eighth in the women's 800-meter run (2:18.27).
On the men's side,
T.J. Herbert (10.60 seconds) and Rudolph (wind-aided 10.55 seconds) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the men's 100-meter dash. Rudolph also qualified for the men's 200-meter dash, finishing eighth (21.41 seconds).
Shaquell Windley qualified in the men's 400-meter dash, finishing seventh (47.90 seconds), while
Abram Taylor finished fifth in the men's 110-meter hurdles (14.80 seconds) and seventh in the men's 400-meter hurdles (53.81 seconds). Freshman
Christian Chapman placed third in the men's 400-meter hurdles (54.33 seconds).
Stephen F. Austin has 71 points, leading host McNeese State, the second-place team, by a 12-point margin on the men's side. The Cowboys (59 points) are joined in the top five by Southeastern Louisiana (43), Sam Houston State (37) and Central Arkansas (23). SFA, which claimed the conference indoor championships in February, won its only outdoor championship in 2011.
The championship concludes Sunday with field events beginning and 10 a.m. Men's and women's competitors will vie for titles in the discus, high jump, pole vault and triple jump. Running event finals begin at 3:05 p.m. A total of 15 events will be decided on the final day. Team champions, runners up and the male and female high-point scorers will be recognized immediately following competition at approximately 6 p.m.
