Lions Take Advantage of Wild Cardinals

Lamar falls two shy of tying NCAA wild pitch record

Freshman right-hander retired Lamar, the leading hitting team in the Southland Conference, in order during six of the first eight innings Saturday
Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana hitters took advantage of wildness on the part of the Lamar pitching staff Saturday to post a 7-5 Southland Conference victory and even the series at one game apiece.

Southeastern (22-10, 7-1 Southland) picked up seven hits, with no batter recording multiple hits, but took advantage of 10 walks, a pair of hit batters and nine wild pitches thrown by Cardinal pitching. The nine wild pitches finished two shy of tying the NCAA Division I record of 11 set by Coppin State during the 2000 season.

Lamar (23-9, 3-5 Southland) used eight pitchers as starter Travis Moore last just one inning. Freshman Brett Brown replaced Moore and was the only pitcher to work more than one inning, last four.

Jameson Fisher double to lead off the second against Moore, stole third on a pick-off attempt and scored on Sam Roberson's single to right. After hitting Jesse Buratt, Brown entered the game for Lamar.

The Cardinals tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth.

Southeastern only need two hits to score its next five runs. Took a 3-1 lead in the fifth after Brown walked both Aaron Haag and Fisher with two outs. Roberson swung and missed at a third strike, but catcher Zach Luevanos couldn't handle the ball in the dirt. Luevanos' throw to first base was late, as Roberson reached, and the return throw to the plate from first baseman Brad Picha was was in the dirt up the third-base line allowing Haag to score from second. Another wild pitch plated Fisher.

Lamar quickly tied the game in the sixth with three hits.

Three more wild pitches in the sixth inning, by three different Cardinal pitchers, aided the Lions in taking the lead back. Brett Hoffman singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ladd Rhodes drew a one-out walk, but was erased on a fielder's choice that allowed Ben Hernandez to reach. Harry Slade singled up the middle to drive in Hoffman and a pair of wild pitches moved Hernandez home from second. Slade was thrown out on a play at the plate to end the inning, saving a possible 10th wild pitch.

Leading 5-3, couple of walks and three wild pitches allowed Roberson to score the eventual winning run in the seventh.

The Cardinals threatened in the ninth, loading the bases to put the potential tying run on base with no outs, but freshman left-hander Kyle Cedotal had a runner doubled off second after a spectacular diving catch in the left-center gap by Ladd Rhodes. After Aaron Olivas struck out, but reach on a wild pitch, Cedotal fanned Luevanos to end the game.

Brown and Tom Elsom were responsible for three wild pitches each while Lance Warren (0-1), J.T. Autrey and Chase Angelle were each charged with one.

Freshman right-hander Tate Scioneaux (4-0) earned the win for the Lions while Cedotal earned the first save of his career. Warren was charged with the loss.

Scioneaux retired the Lamar hitters in order during every inning except when they scored in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings. Lamar's nine hits were spread evenly among its three run-scoring innings.

The series concludes with Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities. Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game. The baseball team will also be signing autographs after Sunday's game.

Senior left-hander Jordan Hymel (4-2, 3.35) takes the starting nod Sunday at 1p.m. for Southeastern and will be opposed by left-hander David Carver (4-2, 4.25).
