Southeastern Remains Unbeaten in Southland Play With 5-2 Win over McNeese

Lions run overall mark to 13-1 and improve to 3-0 in league action

Box Score

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team remained perfect in Southland Conference play with a 5-2 victory over McNeese State Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions (13-1, 3-0 Southland) took the win behind a pair of doubles victories, as well as four straight set singles wins. McNeese State fell to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in league action.

Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes was pleased with his team's attitude and effort in Saturday's league victory.

“McNeese has a good team and is very well coached, so this is a big win for us,” Hayes commented. “We set the tone with a great effort in doubles. I was very happy to see how we played with so much emotion and passion.”

Southeastern picked up a pair of wins in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 2, the pairing of freshman Renee Villarreal and sophomore Adriana Castillo improved to 10-1 this spring with an 8-5 in over Klaudia Gawlik and Andreaa Nenu. Pairing for the first time, Lion senior Isabel Brito and freshman Reginka Nychytailova (1-0) were too much for Cowgirls Diana Pirciu and Annabelle Peacock in an 8-1 victory.

In singles play, Villarreal (12-0) remained undefeated with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Surkova on the No. 3 court. Lion freshman Nastya Tokareva increased her team-high singles win total, moving to 13-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Lara Pujol at No. 2.

At No. 4, junior Valya Rusakova (9-5) snapped a three-match skid with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Nenu. Brito (10-1) continued her stellar play at the bottom of the singles draw, as she got past Peacock, 6-0, 6-4.

Southeastern will close the weekend with a 12 p.m. match versus league foe Lamar (5-6, 1-0 Southland) on Sunday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
