HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 6-1 victory over UTRGV Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU (14-8, 4-5 SLC) swept through doubles play and won five of six singles matches on the way to the victory. UTRGV fell to 5-14 overall and 3-5 in Southland play.
In doubles play,
Bente Bierma and
Paige Duncan (9-7, 4-5 SLC) were too much for the Vaquero duo of Barbara Martinez and Yaiza Vazquez on court 1 in a 6-1 victory. The Lions clinched the doubles point on No. 3, as the freshmen pair of
Mariam Tetradze and
Adriana Tirado (10-7, 2-4 SLC) handled Luna Buijtenhuijs and Valentina Urraco, 6-2. The Southeastern pair of
Taisia Bolsova and
Aitana Darder (12-8, 5-3 SLC) completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 victory over Mariia Bakhtina and Hitakamya Narwal on court 2.
Tirado (16-5, 6-3 SLC) gave Southeastern a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win on No. 6 over Giuliana Castelain. On court 5, Duncan (15-4, 7-2 SLC) was too much for Urraco in a 6-2, 6-1 win. Tetradze (12-4, 4-4 SLC) clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Madeline Joffe on No. 4.
Darder (8-6, 5-4 SLC) made it 5-0 on court 3, outlasting Bakhtina, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Bierma (6-7, 4-3 SLC) closed out the scoring for the Lions, sweeping past Rhea Makesar, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
Southeastern will now head to the Southland Conference Championships, scheduled for April 19-21 in Beaumont, Texas.
