Philipp Westermann and
Rhys West each fired a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Southeastern Louisiana University golf team, but the Lions' five-man lineup carded a combined 8-over par on the final three holes to finish in a fifth-place tie after the first day of the 49th annual Southland Conference Championships on Monday at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
Second-round action in the 54-hole tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Southeastern, which is looking for its fourth overall Southland Conference title, will be paired with defending champion UT Arlington. The winner of the 10-team event will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Southeastern finished with a team score of 299 to finish tied with UTA after the first round and 11 shots behind first-day leader Lamar. Central Arkansas (291) finished second overall behind the Cardinals with Texas State (296) and Stephen F. Austin (298) following.
Westermann and West finished four shots behind first-day leader Xavier Feyaerts of Lamar, who shot a 3-under 69 and was one of three golfers to finish below par. The junior duo each posted a 1-under 35 on the front nine before shooting a 2-over 38 on the back.
Freshman
Baptiste Courtachon, who battled back from a slow start on the front nine, bogeyed two of his final three holes to finish with a 4-over 76. Freshman
Grady Brame, who was 2-over through his first 16 holes, recorded a bogey on No. 17 and a double bogey on No. 18 to finish at 5-over 77 with freshman
Santiago Mejia carding an 81.
Mitchell McLeroy of SFA and Austin Moix of UCA joined Feyaerts with rounds below par as the duo each posted a 2-under 70.
