HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana soccer team closed out the 2012 regular season with its fourth straight shutout victory, celebrating Senior Day with a 2-0 victory over Southland Conference foe Northwestern State Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

Junior Kelsey Salcido and freshman Kayla Vera scored the goals for Southeastern (11-6-1, 5-2-1 Southland), while senior Dana Songe was credited with an assist for the Lady Lions, who will compete in the Southland Conference Tournament, which opens Thursday in Lake Charles. Northwestern State finished the season with a 6-11-1 overall record and 1-6-1 mark in league action.

Southeastern senior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus finished with five saves on the way to her ninth shutout of the season and Southland Conference record 39th shutout of her career. The two-time reigning Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week has allowed just one goal in the last six matches.

Songe and Bockhaus were among 11 seniors playing in their final match, along with Tabitha McReynolds, Kailey Mills, Cassie Northrup, Sam McNally, Megan Miller, Kerry McWhirter, Lauren Stillians, Karly Dagys and Maiya Cooper. Every Lady Lion senior that was active saw action with reserve goalkeeper Northrup playing forward for the first time in her career.

“Our senior class' legacy has been established no matter the results in the conference tournament,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We're looking forward to competing in Lake Charles.”

Vera gave Southeastern the lead in the match's 28th minute. The Vancouver, Wash. native evaded a NSU defender and ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the net to put Southeastern up, 1-0, with her fifth goal of the season.

The Lady Lions doubled the lead with just over four minutes left in the opening half. Songe was able to settle a corner kick, took a touch and flicked the ball towards the net. A charging Salcido deposited the ball inside the near post past diving NSU goalkeeper Brooke Bourbonais to double the Southeastern lead heading into the break.

Southeastern had a chance to pad its lead in the second half. However, NSU goalkeeper Jessica Danku made sliding saves on shots by Dagys and Stillians.

Bockhaus was credited with four saves in the second half. The Lady Lion back line of junior Shanyce Shaw, sophomore Chelsea Villaescusa, freshman Cheyenne Maxwell and freshman Maddie Allen held NSU at bay to preserve the shutout victory.

Friday was also the first “Swabbin' for Robin” event on campus. Southeastern registered 27 new donors on the opening day of the campaign.

Southeastern will await the results of the remaining Southland Conference matches to find out their first round matchup on Thursday. Live stats and video will be provided by the Southland Conference and will be accessible at www.LionSports.net.
