SLU Secures 2-1 Road Win Over UIW

The Lady Lions posted their second conference road win of the season with a 2-1 victory over UIW to open week five of league play

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team opened the week with a 2-1 victory over UIW on the road Thursday evening in Benson Stadium.

Southeastern (4-6-4, 3-2-2 SLC) gained a massive road win over UIW (4-6-3, 2-3-2 SLC) in week five of Southland Conference play to regain its position in the winning category. The Lady Lions recorded their second conference road win of the season as freshman Alexandra Knight and junior Charlotte Lewis answered the call to connect in the net. SLU goalkeeper Kendall Curran finished with an exceptional performance in the net with five saves against the Cardinals.

SLU came out aggressive on the road and took control of the ball early in the opening minutes of the match. Knight posted her third goal of the season in the 5th minute of the match to seal a three-way tie to lead Southeastern in scoring. The Shreveport, La. native struck first to help the Lady Lions claim a 1-0 lead over UIW. The Cardinals quickly responded back in the 9th minute of the match with a goal that sailed into the back of the net by Sinead Duffy to equalize the contest, 1-1.

As both teams came out strong in the opening ten minutes of the match, SLU battled in the first half as it worked to stay on the attack. The Lady Lions relentlessly put pressure on UIW's goalkeeper Hannah Alexander with multiple shots on goal. The Cardinals fought to claim momentum once again, but Southeastern's defense held strong to deny every opportunity the remainder of the first half. Alexander finished with a busy night in the net as SLU continued to formulate offensive attacks, but the Lady Lions could not extend their lead before halftime, 1-1.

Southeastern carried over its momentum from the first half as it continued to be a thorn in UIW's side with a series of attacks from the back line. Lewis snuck a goal in the net off an assist by Loegan Alia in the 50th minute of the match to record her second goal of the season. The Lady Lions gained a 2-1 edge over the Cardinals early in the second half. Sophomore Lainey Connell stepped up big for SLU defensively as she limited opportunities for UIW on the attack. Southeastern remained tenacious as the Cardinals had no answer for the visitors in the opening of the second half.

The Lady Lions' defense denied opportunities around the net as it held UIW scoreless from the first 15 minutes of the second half. SLU continued to control the pace of the match as it did not let its foot off the gas, working to launch a series of shots. The Cardinals gained a solid look midway in the half, but could not capitalize as Alia kicked the ball out of play. Southeastern kept UIW goalkeeper Alexander active in the net as it worked to extend its lead. The Cardinals fought to find an answer to equalize the match, but SLU slowed the pace of the contest to value quality possessions.

UIW seized a counter attack, but Southeastern's defense forced the hosts to work for every offensive attack. The Lady Lions regained its aggressive edge with a series of attacks, but could not add to their lead. The Cardinals secured an opening in the final ten minutes of the match, but Curran posted her last save of the night to keep the hosts scoreless in the second half. SLU's defense helped knock off UIW on the road to deliver the Cardinals their third consecutive conference loss.

Southeastern will return to Hammond, America to welcome East Texas A&M to Strawberry Stadium Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear green in support of the Lady Lions for their Green Out match. Sunday's match will be streamed on ESPN+.
