Southeastern Falls 2-1 to East Texas A&M at Home

The Lady Lions suffer their second home loss of the season against East Texas A&M to close out week five of Southland Conference play

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team finished week five of Southland Conference play with a 2-1 loss at home Sunday afternoon against East Texas A&M.

The Lady Lions (4-7-4, 3-3-2 SLC) suffered its second loss at home this season against East Texas A&M (6-6-4, 3-1-4 SLC). East Texas A&M claimed the early advantage and sealed the deal in the final five minutes of the match. Sophomore forward Isabella Fregoso recorded her first collegiate goal to equalize the match and give Southeastern a spark of momentum before falling short. SLU goalkeeper Kendall Curran finished with a busy night in the net with six saves against the Lions.

Both teams came out to a slow start in the opening minutes as they battled to control the pace of the match. East Texas A&M gained its footing on the road as it picked up its intensity to formulate multiple attacks. Curran withstood the Lions attacks early, but the visitors remained aggressive midway through the first half reap their reward. Sophomore midfielder Alana Lawless-Felarca connected in the net in the 31st minute of the match off an assist by Judith Nandwa to secure the lead for East Texas A&M. The Dallas, Texas native recorded her third goal of the season to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

Southeastern quickly regrouped as the tide of momentum favored the visitors. Fregoso responded back for SLU off an assist by Aja Nelson in the 34th minute of the contest as she connected in the net to equalize the match, 1-1. East Texas A&M remained aggressive in an effort to regain its advantage, but Curran denied every opportunity around the net for the visitors late in the first quarter. Southeastern fought to develop multiple counter attacks, but could not capitalize to take the lead in the final minutes of the first half. The Lions ended the half with a 8-3 edge in shots as both teams recorded a 3-3 tie in corner kick opportunities.

SLU came out aggressive in the opening of the second half and quickened the tempo of the match to apply pressure to the Lions' defense. Nelson stepped up to lead Southeastern with four shots, but could not extend Southeastern's lead as East Texas A&M goalkeeper Gillian McKinzie protected the net in the second half with two saves. The Lady Lions refused to back down on their home field, firing six shots in the second half alone. The Lions kept their composure as they worked to spread out SLU's defense and steadily put pressure on the hosts' back line.

East Texas A&M capitalized off a few off Southeastern's misdirected passes with multiple solid opportunities around the net. SLU battled to find the seams within the Lions' defense, but could not execute down the stretch in the second half. East Texas A&M continued to capitalize off counter attacks as Mya Mitchell seized an opportunity and broke free in the final five minutes of the match. Mitchell secured the game winning goal for the Lions in the 85th minute of the match to take the lead, 2-1.

Southeastern fought to tie the match in the last minute, but would get no closer as East Texas A&M claimed its second league road win of the season.
