Lady Lions Visit UIW, Host East Texas A&M in SLC Week Five

Southeastern travels to San Antonio, Texas to face UIW before hosting East Texas A&M at home for week five of conference play

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will travel to San Antonio, Texas Thursday at 7 p.m. to face UIW before hosting East Texas A&M Sunday at 1 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern (3-6-4, 2-2-2 SLC) opens week five of Southland Conference play on the road against UIW (4-5-3, 2-2-2 SLC). In its last match against the Cardinals in 2024, SLU secured a 1-0 victory in its 14th contest in program history. Thursday's match against UIW will be televised on ESPN+.

The Lady Lions will finish the week at home against East Texas A&M (5-6-4, 2-1-4 SLC) as the end of the regular season draws near. Live stats, for both matches, can be accessed on the women's soccer schedule page at  www.LionSports.net.

SLU is seeking to reclaim its position within the top five of SLC women's soccer standings after suffering a 1-0 loss to Lamar in Beaumont, Texas and 2-2 draw against Nicholls at home in the Crystal Cup rivalry. The Cardinals' defense held their visitors scoreless the entire match as Southeastern endured its third shutout of the season. In its latest match against the Colonels, freshman Aja Nelson claimed her first multi-goal match to help the Lady Lions equalize the match. The freshman ties to lead SLU in scoring with three goals off 15 shots and eight shots on goal.

Southeastern goalkeeper Kendall Curran has continued to handle all the responsibility in the net this season with 69 saves and a 1.62 goals against average. The Lady Lions have recorded 13 goals, 113 shots, 53 shots on goal and nine assists this season. 

UIW ended week four of league play 0-2 after falling 1-0 against UTRGV and 2-1 to HCU on the road. The Cardinals suffered their third shutout of the season against the Vaqueros in Edinburg, Texas. Freshman forward Atiana Lara posted the lone goal for UIW against the Huskies to claim her fourth goal of the season. Lara leads the Cardinals in scoring with eight points, nine shots on goal, 16 shots and two game winners. UIW has recorded 15 goals, 69 shots on goal, 166 shots and 13 assists so far this season. Cardinal goalkeeper Hannah Alexander has logged 1,080 minutes in the net this season with 52 saves and a 1.52 goals against average.
 

East Texas A&M closed out last week 1-1 after claiming a 1-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin before falling 3-1 to Northwestern State at home. The Lions are looking to bounce back from loss at home as they stand fourth in conference standings. East Texas A&M has secured 17 goals led by junior forward Mya Mitchell with six goals and three assists this season. Junior Hannah Bell follows up with four goals and three assists for the Lions as they have recorded 195 shots, 71 shots on goal and 16 assists. East Texas A&M goalkeeper Gillian McKinzie, Veronica Pacione, and Makayla Gonzalez have split the majority of the responsibilities in the net with 52 saves combined and a 1.13 goals against average.

Fans are encouraged to support the Lady Lions by turning Strawberry Stadium into a sea of green for their green out match against East Texas A&M Sunday. After Sunday's match, Southeastern will remain at home as HCU visits Hammond, America Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Thursday's match against the Huskies will be streamed on ESPN+.
