HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team worked out for just over two hours Wednesday afternoon after beginning classes for the fall semester earlier in the day.
The Lions worked in shells on the adjacent practice fields, continuing to install their offensive and defensive packages while adjusting to the first day schedule after concentrating solely on football since reporting to camp on Aug. 2.
“I thought we had a good workout for the first day of classes,” Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas said. “The first day usually drags a bit, but we had good concentration and got a lot of work done.”
Quarterbacks
Brian Young and
Nathan Stanley each took turns working with the No. 1 offense and looked impressive in their repetitions. Receivers
Simmie Yarborough,
Brandon Collins,
Kory Theodore,
Jarrett Johnson and redshirt freshman
Blane Arnold stood out in 11-on-11 drills with running backs
Zeke Jones,
Michael Chaney,
LaTruan Weary and
Jordan Wells providing the bulk of the carries.
“Both quarterbacks had really good days today, the receivers made some nice catches and the offensive line did a good job up front,” Lucas said. “We've gotten a lot of the offense in and I think we're going in the right direction.”
Juniors
Tay Alford,
Kevin Roberts and
Jordan McClay each picked off passes to lead the defense while defensive end
Devan Walker was impressive in individual and team drills.
Southeastern, which opens its season on Sept. 3 against Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome, will return to practice on Thursday with a 3:30 workout.
