BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team dropped a 56-10 decision at No. 3/4 LSU Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
Southeastern will enter Southland Conference play with a 2-2 record with both losses coming at the hands of FBS competition. The Tigers, the highest-ranked FBS foe SLU has faced since the program returned prior to the 2003 season, moved to 4-0 on the season.
Carson Camp (8-for-13, 87 yards, 1 TD) and
Kyle Lowe (3-for-8, 29 yards) split time under center for a SLU offense that managed 204 total yards.
Deantre Jackson led SLU with three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.
KK Reno led Southeastern in tackles for the fourth straight game, finishing with a game-high 14 tackles.
Kaleb Proctor, rated the top FCS defensive lineman by Pro Football Focus last week, led SLU with two sacks and three tackles for loss.
LSU racked up 530 yards of total offense in the win. Garrett Nussmeier finished with 276 yards passing and three scores on 25-for-31 passing. Ju'Juan Johnson led the Tigers with two rushing touchdowns.
The two teams traded three-and-outs to start the game. An 18-yard Lion punt set up the Tigers at the SLU 45-yard line for their second drive of the game. LSU took advantage of the short field, marching 45 yards on 13 plays with Nussmeier sneaking in from a yard out to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 5:08 left in the opening quarter.
Southeastern picked up a couple of first downs on its ensuing possession, but the Tigers stopped the Lions short on a fourth-and-one at the SLU 44-yard line. LSU again took advantage of the short field, as Johnson scored from two yards out to double the Tigers advantage to 14-0 with 13:12 left in the second quarter.
LSU would add to its lead on the next two drives, as Johnson again found pay dirt from 10 yards out with 8:19 left in the period, then Nussmeier found Barion Brown from 17 yards out just before the two-minute warning to give the Tigers a 28-0 lead.
On a third-and-goal with 15 seconds left, Nussmeier connected with Zavion Thomas on a nine-yard scoring toss to send the Tigers into the break with a 35-0 cushion.
LSU added to its lead on the first drive of the third quarter. Former Lion Bauer Sharp scored on a 23-yard scoring toss from Nussmeier to put the Tigers up, 42-0, with 9:28 left in the third quarter.
SLU broke through on the ensuing possession, marching 75 yards on eight plays. Jackson caught a screen pass from Camp and slipped in from 14 yards out to get the Lions on the board with 6:07 left in the third quarter.
LSU answered with a 16-play, 81-yard scoring drive that carried the game into the final period. Michael Van Buren Jr. capped the seven-minute plus march with a one-yard scoring plunge to put the Tigers up, 49-7, with 13:51 left.
The Tigers added to their lead midway through the fourth quarter. Kyle Parker hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Van Buren Jr. to give LSU a 56-7 lead with 8:11 remaining.
SLU's
Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez closed out the scoring with a 37-yard field goal just before the two-minute warning to trim the final margin to 56-10.
SLU will return home to host UTRGV in the Southland Conference opener Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The game versus the Vaqueros will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network (Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM, The Boss 103.7 FM/WFPR 1400 AM).
