HAMMOND – Josh Cryer went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI and Southeastern Louisiana struck for five runs in the fifth inning to pull away and defeat Southern University, 10-4, in a nonconference game Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Jason Greenleaf and
Matt Pittari combined to pitch 7.2 innings out of the bullpen as Southeastern (23-11) scored eight unanswered runs after Southern (19-12) took a 4-2 lead in the third.
Cryer, who moved past former Lion Macky Waguespack into third place in school history with 211 hits, capped a two-run first inning for the Lions with an RBI single that scored
Justin Boudreaux before leading off the fourth with a game-tying solo home run off Southern's Belfred Pryer (3-3).
Southeastern broke the game open in the fifth as
Trey Martin led off with an infield single before moving to second when
Brock Hebert was hit by a pitch. After
Jeff Harkensee was walked with one out to load the bases,
Jonathan Pace delivered a two-run double to left field before Cryer greeted Jaguar reliever Brian Foster with a two-run single to left.
Greenleaf (3-2) equaled his season-high on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing three hits and an unearned run. Pittari pitched the final four innings and recorded five strikeouts to notch his first career save.
Southern erased a 2-0 deficit in the second inning as DeMario Ellis hit a sacrifice fly before Ozzie Lamis and Taylor Roy each drew bases-loaded walks for a 3-2 lead. Greenleaf, who relieved Southeastern starter
Jordan Hymel, walked Roy before getting Frazier Hall to hit into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
The Jaguars upped their lead to 4-2 in the third inning on an RBI single by David Nolting before Southeastern began its rally.
Boudreaux, who went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, doubled off the wall in left field, stole third and scored on Harkensee's grounder to short.
Bryan Rowry led Southern at the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Lamis went 2-for-3 for the Jaguars, who hit into a pair of double plays and stranded 11 men on base.
Pryer (3-3) took the loss for the Jaguars after allowing eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Foster pitched 3.2 innings in relief for the Jaguars giving up a pair of runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
Southeastern will return to action beginning Friday when it travels to face Southland Conference leader Texas State in a three-game series. First pitch in Friday's opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with the series resuming Saturday at 2 and concluding Sunday at 1.
