SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Cody Gougler went 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and a two-run home run while
Tyler Watkins pitched seven innings with six strikeouts as Southeastern Louisiana defeated UTSA, 10-4, to complete a three-game sweep Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
Jonathan Pace went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 13 games while
Jeff Harkensee and
Josh Cryer hit back-to-back home runs as Southeastern (12-4, 3-0 SLC) won for the sixth time in its last seven games. UTSA fell to 6-12 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Southeastern scored three runs in the first inning with
Justin Boudreaux hitting an RBI single and Gougler lacing a two-out double to right-center field off UTSA starter Jordan Langley (1-2) to score Boudreaux and Cryer.
The Lions added three more runs in the third after Langley retired the first two batters of the frame. Harkensee belted a 1-and-0 pitch from Langley over the right-field wall for his sixth home run of the season before Cryer belted his first of the season two pitches later. Gougler and
Joe Sparacino followed with back-to-back doubles off Langley, who went 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits.
Watkins (3-0) scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs before being relieved by true freshman
Dylan Hills in the eighth inning.
Southeastern added an unearned run in the fourth inning, a run in the fifth before scoring twice in the seventh to take a 10-2 lead. Cryer, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, led off with a double off UTSA reliever Michael Kraft before Gougler belted a 1-2 over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to face Tulane in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Turchin Stadium.
