SAN ANTONIO, Texas – There's something recently about pitching against UTSA that brings out the best in
Brandon Efferson.
The senior right-hander tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout while
Jeff Harkensee fueled an 11-hit attack going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI as Southeastern Louisiana claimed a 6-0 win over the Roadrunners in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Friday at Roadrunner Field.
The series resumes on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. Southeastern (10-4, 1-0 Southland) will send right-hander
Joseph Koon (2-1, 5.17 ERA) to the mound while UTSA (6-10, 0-1 Southland) will counter with southpaw Casey Selsor (0-2, 4.70 ERA).
Efferson (3-0), who combined with
Josh Janway on a four-hit, 2-0 shutout of UTSA last season, fanned a season-high nine batters in notching his third career complete game. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single to Riley Good in the first inning, a second-inning double to Selsor in the second and a fifth-inning triple to Mike James before eventually retiring the final 13 batters he faced.
Southeastern scored all the runs it would need as it broke up a scoreless contest in the third with a two-out rally.
Jonathan Pace singled to left field to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 11 games before stealing second.
Justin Boudreaux followed with an opposite-field single off UTSA starter Taylor Walton (2-2) to score Pace and give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The Lions struck again in the fifth inning as Pace singled and Boudreaux was hit by a pitch. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Walton, Harkensee delivered a two-run double to left-center field to give Southeastern a 3-0 lead.
Southeastern broke the game open in the seventh as it sent eight men to the plate and took advantage after UTSA got two outs in the frame. Pace gave the Lions a 4-0 lead when he scored on a squeeze bunt by
Josh Cryer and
Joe Sparacino and
Britt Gautreaux each drew two-out walks.
Brock Hebert greeted reliever Matt Locus with a two-run single to center that scored Harkensee and Sparacino and gave Southeastern a commanding 6-0 lead.
Pace, Boudreaux and Cryer all collected two hits each for Southeastern, which had its top five hitters go 10-for-21 at the plate with five runs scored and four RBI. The Lions also swiped three bases with Boudreaux stealing twice and Pace adding a steal.
Walton pitched five innings for the Roadrunners, allowing six hits and striking out two. UTSA reliever Matt Sims walked four batters and allowed three runs in 1.2 innings for the Roadrunners before Locus pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed no runs on four hits.
