Lady Lions in four-way fight for final spot in next month's Southland Tournament

Aja Gibson and the Lady Lions head to UCA on Saturday
CONWAY, Ark. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to continue to improve its Southland Conference Tournament chances on Saturday, when it travels to face league foe Central Arkansas in a 2 p.m. contest in the Farris Center.

The Lady Lions (12-13, 4-9 Southland) will be looking to avoid being swept by the host Sugar Bears (16-10, 8-5 Southland). Live stats, audio and video from Saturday's game will be available at www.ucasports.com.

Seven berths have been clinched for next month's Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas and Southeastern is one of four teams battling for the eighth and final spot with three regular season games remaining. Currently, the Lady Lions are tied with Texas State and UT Arlington for eighth place, but holds the tiebreaker over both by virtue of its head-to-head wins earlier this season. Nicholls is a game back of the eighth-place trio and hosts Southeastern in the regular season finale on March 5.

Southeastern improved its postseason chances on Wednesday with a 69-66 win over Texas State in the University Center. Lady Lion junior guard Kelli Jenkins scored a game-high 16 points and secured the victory with a steal on the Bobcats' final possession.

Jenkins was joined in double figures by freshman guard Aja Gibson and senior guard Chelsea Hix, who finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively. For the season, Southeastern is averaging 63.0 points per game, as senior forward Rashima Jenkins (10.6 ppg, 22nd) and Kelli Jenkins (10.4 ppg, 23rd) both rank among the league's leading scorers. Gibson (7.5 ppg), Hix (7.4 ppg) and senior center Rachel Mackie (6.7 ppg).

Southeastern shot 40.3 percent from the floor in Wednesday's win and continue to lead the league with a 41.4 team field goal percentage. Rashima Jenkins (50.7, 3rd) and Kelli Jenkins (42.4, 12th) both rank among the league's most accurate shooters. Hix is also 14th in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 32 percent of her shots from behind the arc.

Hix, who hit two three-point field goals in Wednesday's victory, is also 13th in the league with 1.6 treys per game. The Canton, Ga. native's 153 three-point field goals also sit her second on the school's career list.

Kelli Jenkins led Southeastern with five assists versus Texas State and currently ninth in the Southland with 3.6 assists per game. With 301 career assists, Jenkins ranks sixth on the program's career list.

Texas State out-rebounded Southeastern, 47-40, on Wednesday, but Southeastern remains atop the league with a plus-3.7 rebounding margin. Rashima Jenkins pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in the win and is currently 10th in the league with 7.3 rebounds per game. Mackie's 6.6 boards per contest ranks her 12th in the Southland and she sits in 14th on the school's career list with 504 career rebounds.

Kelli Jenkins led Southeastern with three steals versus Texas State, while senior guard Mary Fountain blocked a game-high two shots. On the year, opponents are scoring 66.3 points and committing 16.7 turnovers per game versus Southeastern. Jenkins leads the team with 35 steals, followed by junior guard Latoria Holder (33) and Fountain (32). Holder and Fountain top the team in blocked shots with 13 and 12, respectively.

In its first season of postseason eligibility since transitioning from Division II, Central Arkansas clinched a spot with a 68-53 win at Nicholls on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Megan Herbert finished with 25 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Sugar Bears to victory.

The Sugar Bears also top the Southland with 192 three-point field goals. Rice leads the team with 43 treys, while sophomore forward Westin Taylor has hit 40 shots from behind the arc and ranks third in the league with a team-best 36.0 three-point field goal percentage.

UCA is averaging 39.7 rebounds per game and is second in the league with a plus-3.5 rebounding margin. Herbert leads the Southland with 11.7 rebounds per game and is the only player in the league averaging a double-double.
