Lady Lions Open Home Southland Schedule Versus Islanders

Southeastern looks to remain unbeaten at home

The first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring Shauna Stewart
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will open its Southland Conference home schedule on Saturday, welcoming Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a 3 p.m. contest in the University Center.

Southeastern (8-5, 0-1 Southland) will be looking to protect its perfect 5-0 home record, while the visiting Islanders (2-13, 0-2 Southland) will be searching for its first league win of 2010-11. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.

In conjunction with the game with the Islanders, the program will host Heroes Night, as all current and former policemen, fire fighters, medical and military personnel will receive discounted admission with proper identification.

Also, junior forward Shauna Stewart will be the Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Houston native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE. The Houston, Texas native has been a key reserve for the Lady Lions in 2010-11, averaging 4.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest.

Southeastern has dropped its last two games, including a 66-55 loss in its Southland Conference opener last Saturday at Stephen F. Austin. SFA used a 7-0 run to start the second half to pull away by as many as 21 points before Southeastern rallied to single digits late.

In the loss, Lady Lion senior forward Rashima Jenkins led all scorers with 13 points. Jenkins was joined in double figures by junior guards Kelli Jenkins and Latoria Holder with both scoring 10 points each.

Southeastern senior center Rachel Mackie also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Rashima Jenkins pulled down seven boards, while Kelli Jenkins, Holder and senior guard Mary Fountain dished out three assists each.

The Lady Lions head into Saturday's game averaging 63.5 points per game and second in the Southland with a 40 percent team field goal percentage. Rashima Jenkins leads the team with 10.1 ppg and ranks 24th in the league in points per game. Kelli Jenkins (9.5 ppg, 26th) is also among the league's leading scorers, while freshman forward Aja Gibson (8.4 ppg), Holder (7.2 ppg), Mackie (6.4 ppg) and senior guard Chelsea Hix (6.2 ppg) also fuel a balanced Lady Lion attack.

Southeastern's post tandem of Rashima Jenkins (49.5 field goal percentage, 5th) and Gibson (47.3, 6th) rank among the league's most accurate shooters. Hix is 14th in the Southland with 1.6 three-point field goals made and ranks among the school's career leaders in three-point field goals made and attempted, as well as three-point field goal percentage.

Much like Hix, Kelli Jenkins is moving up a career list of her own, ranking seventh in school history in assists. In 2010-11, the Plaquemine native is third in the Southland with 4.0 assists per game.

Southeastern has led the Southland in rebounding margin throughout the season, as the Lady Lions have out-rebounded foes by an average of 4.7 rebounds per game. Rashima Jenkins tops the team and is fifth in the Southland with 7.6 boards per contest. Mackie (5.9 rpg, 13th) also ranks among the league's top rebounders.

Defensively, Southeastern is holding opponents to 65.1 points per game and force 20.2 turnovers per contest. Holder (1.9 steals per game, 9th) and Fountain (1.8 spg, 11th) are among the league's leaders in steals per game. Holder also is 14th in the league with nine blocked shots.

Southeastern will meet a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team that has struggled due to injuries, most notably the losses of senior guard Lauren Smith and senior center Myeisha Myles. In their most recent outing, the Islanders fell 69-44 at UTSA on Wednesday.

In the loss, sophomore guard Ashley Darley led A&M-Corpus Christi with 13 points. The Islanders also had a huge 52-34 rebounding advantage, behind 10 rebounds from reserve junior forward Zoey Vega-Vega.

However, the Islanders struggled on the offensive end leading to their defeat. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot just 27.6 percent from the floor and committed 24 turnovers.

For the year, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is averaging 57.3 points per game. Senior forward Arianne Scott leads the team with 11.3 points per game, followed by sophomore guard Jessica Jammer (7.8 ppg) and Darley (7.2 ppg). Senior guard Jade Davis leads the team with 1.3 assists per game and 11 three-point field goals.

The Islanders are averaging 38.7 rebounds per contest and is being outrebounded by 6.2 boards per game. Senior forward Anita Jeffery leads the team and ranks sixth in the Southland with 7.4 rebounds per contest. Scott is pulling down 7.2 boards per outing.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is allowing 71.5 points and forcing 19.7 turnovers per contest. Darley currently sits in fifth in the league with 2.3 steals per outing. Scott is the team's leader with 16 blocked shots.

Southeastern is 2-3 all-time versus the Islanders. Since Texas A&M-Corpus Christi joined the Southland Conference prior to the 2006-07 season, neither team has won at home during the series. Last season, A&M-Corpus Christi had four players score in double figures, countering an 18-point, seven-rebound effort from then-Lady Lion senior forward Zevy Ivory on the way to a 75-67 win over the Lady Lions in Hammond.

Southeastern will head back on the road on Wednesday, facing McNeese State at 7 p.m. in Lake Charles. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
