HAMMOND – Looking to build on a strong performance at last weekend's Jackson State Invitational, the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball team will head to Mobile to compete in the Jaguar Classic, which opens Thursday at the Jag Gym on the University of South Alabama campus.
The Lady Lions (3-1) will open the tournament versus the host Jaguars (0-3). Southeastern's schedule on Friday has been altered, as the Lady Lions will take on UNC-Asheville (1-2) at 1 p.m. and Alabama A&M at 5 p.m. Tournament play for Southeastern concludes on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first serve versus Alabama State.
Last weekend in Jackson, Southeastern opened the season with wins over Jackson State, UNO and Louisiana-Monroe. A tough three-set loss to North Texas is the only blemish on the Lady Lions' record so far in 2010.
Offensively, Southeastern is led by sophomore
Courtney Donald (2.29 kills per set) and freshman
Cherish Krohn (2.22 kps). Sophomore
Taylor Buckner (1.85 kps), senior
Allison Jones (1.79 kps) and junior
Paige Dollison (1.64 kps) have also been productive for the Lady Lions.
Junior
Arianne Cruckshank is tops on the team with a .571 hitting percentage and also paces the squad with 7.75 assists per set. Cruckshank and freshman
Lindsey Young (4.40 aps) have handled the setting duties for Southeastern.
Defensively, 2009 All-Southland Conference performer and Lady Lion senior
Alex Greer leads the team with 3.60 digs per set, followed by Buckner (2.15 dps) and freshman
Monica Raymond (2.00 dps). Dollison tops the Lady Lions with just under a block per set, followed by Donald and freshman
Stephanie Mueller – both who are averaging 0.79 blocks per set.
South Alabama will be looking for its first win of the season. Juliana Almeida is the Jaguars' top attacker with 2.78 kills per set, while setter Jennica Hagberg paces the squad with a 5.56 assist per set average. Samia Solomao (3.89 dps) and Kari Frasier (3.22 dps) fortify the USA defense.
UNC-Asheville features the tandem of Kelsey Benorden (3.90 kps) and Cindi Miller (3.60 kps). Rachel Guinane (10.40 aps) has been an effective setter early in 2010, while Benorden also leads the team with 4.50 digs per set.
Individual statistics are not available for Alabama A&M and Alabama State both who will be looking for their first wins of 2010 this weekend. Alabama A&M opened the season with 3-0 losses to Indiana, Georgia Tech and Alabama-Birmingham. Belhaven and Xavier (N.O.) took down ASU to open the year.
Following this weekend's tournament, Southeastern returns to the court next Tuesday, facing Louisiana-Lafayette in a 7 p.m. non-conference road match.
