ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Former Southeastern Louisiana University golfer Steven Tiley became the second former Lion in as many months to compete in one of professional golf's great events after he made his debut last week at the 139th British Open.
Tiley, who played for Southeastern from 2002-04 and holds the school record for the lowest career scoring average (72.91), opened the tournament with a 6-under-par 66 to finish three shots of the first-day lead.
Heavy winds on the second day saw Tiley card a 79, but the native of England made the cut and finished the tournament with rounds of 73 and 74 to finish at 4-over-par 292 on the historic Old Course.
Tiley, who turned professional in 2007, earned a spot in the Open after winning a three-man playoff.
Tiley joined former Lion teammate Hugo Leon in making their debut on the PGA Tour. Leon, who played for the Lions from 2003-07, qualified for the U.S. Open last month in Pebble Beach, Calif.
