HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana junior men's golfer
Cedric Scotto was named to the 2009-10 College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI Men's At-Large Team in an announcement from the CoSIDA office on Thursday.
Scotto, a management major from Albi, France with a 3.70 grade point average, was named to the first team after helping the Lions win their first Southland Conference title since 2000. As a first team selection, Scotto will advance to the Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America team will be announced on June 8.
Scotto was the only Southland Conference student-athlete to be named to the Academic-All District Men's At-Large squad. He is the fourth Southeastern representative on the 2009-10 Academic All-District teams, joining fellow first team selections
Dana Mayer (women's soccer),
Josh Cryer (baseball) and
Katie Duhe (softball).
The 2009 Southland Conference Men's Golfer of the Year, Scotto repeated as a first team All-Southland Conference selection in 2010 after helping the Lions to the league title with a seventh-place finish at last month's Southland Championships at Carter Plantation in Springfield. Third on the team with a 72.70 stroke average, Scotto has five top-10 finishes to his credit in 2009-10, including individual medalist performances at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Classic in the fall and the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic in the spring.
The academic honor is the latest in a long line of accolades for Scotto. Last season, he was named the Southland Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year and was selected to the Southland Conference All-Academic team. He was also named the 2008-09 Southeastern Male Student-Athlete of the Year by the Athletic Department's head coaches and administrators.
The University Division of District VI encompasses all of the Division I schools in the states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average who has completed one full calendar year at his or her institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
The Academic All-America At-Large program includes the sports of women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, water polo, men's volleyball and men's wrestling.
Scotto and the Lions are currently competing in the NCAA East Regional, which runs through Saturday in New Haven, Conn. Live scoring updates from the regional are available at www.LionSports.net.
