Southeastern Falls Short in Competitive Non-Conference Finale at USM

Contest featured four singles matches that were extended to three sets

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In a match that featured four three-set singles matches, Southeastern Louisiana freshman Camille Pilon earned her 10th singles victory of the spring, but the Lady Lions were defeated 6-1 by Southern Miss in their non-conference regular season finale Monday afternoon at the USM Tennis Complex.

Southeastern fell to 8-11 overall with the defeat, while Southern Miss ran its dual match mark to 12-9.

Southern Miss took the lead by sweeping doubles play. The most competitive match was at No. 3, where Lady Lion sophomores Mia Hagiu and Annika Hanke were outlasted by USM's Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers, 8-5.

The Lady Eagles took a 3-0 lead with straight set victories at No. 4 and No. 5, but the remaining four singles matches were decided in third sets. Southern Miss clinched the match at No. 1, where Lady Lion sophomore Audrey Chelini (12-7) had her five-match singles winning streak snapped by Vroni van Berlo, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

At No. 6, Rogers rallied from a set down to defeat Hanke (5-8), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Pilon helped the Lady Lions avoid the shutout at No. 3, improving to 10-8 on the seasons. The Orleans, France native defeated Elja van Berlo, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 10-8.

Southern Miss closed out the match at No. 2, where Lady Lion sophomore Morgane Dadot (14-4) suffered only her fourth singles loss of the spring. The Reunion, France product dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision to Stephanie Dellocono.

The Lady Lions will return to action on Saturday, facing Southland Conference rival Lamar at 10 a.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
