Southeastern Closes Home Schedule, Hosts UCA for Senior Day

Ivory, Edmonson to be honored prior to Saturday's 3 p.m. start

Senior Zevy Ivory (Shreveport, La.) is one of two seniors to be honored prior to Saturday's game
HAMMOND – Seniors Zevy Ivory and Kim Edmonson will be honored in a special Senior Day ceremony prior to the Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team's 2009-10 home finale versus Southland Conference East Division co-leader Central Arkansas on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Lady Lions (10-16, 4-9 Southland) head into Saturday's game with a two-game lead for the final berth in the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for March 9-12 in Katy, Texas, over McNeese State and Texas State. Though in its final year of transition from Division II and thus not eligible for postseason play, UCA (20-6, 10-3 Southland) is still in the hunt for the regular season league title despite having the Southland's youngest roster.

Southeastern will be looking to avoid a season sweep by the Sugar Bears, who defeated the Lady Lions, 75-55, back on Jan. 30 in Conway. The game will be broadcast live on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.

In Edmonson and Ivory, Southeastern will be saying goodbye to a pair of seniors who have made their mark in the school's record books. A key reserve for last season's Southland East Division championship team, Edmonson is tied for sixth in school history with 95 career three-point field goals.

In addition to being honored in her final home game, Ivory will be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Shreveport native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role-models Involved in the Development of Excellence). Ivory is currently 13th in school history with 508 career rebounds and ranks fourth in school history with 78 career blocked shots.

Southeastern will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid. Ivory scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Kelli Jenkins added 15 points and – along with freshman guard Erica Burgess – dished out a team-high three assists in Wednesday's 75-67 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

For the season, Southeastern is averaging 62.3 points and 12.2 assists per contest. Ivory and junior forward Rashima Jenkins share the team lead with 9.3 points per game, followed by Kelli Jenkins (9.0 ppg), Edmonson (7.5 ppg) and Burgess (6.2 ppg). Ivory (11.6 ppg), Kelli Jenkins (11.2 ppg) and Rashima Jenkins (11.0 ppg) are all averaging in double figures versus league competition.

Junior guard Chelsea Hix is sixth on the team with 6.1 points per game and ranks third in school history with 107 career three-point field goals. With 102 assists on the season, Jenkins ranks fourth in the Southland and is the first Lady Lion to top 100 assists since Ann Webster in the 2001-02 season.

The Lady Lions are allowing a league-low 36.7 rebounds per game and are fourth in the league with a plus-1.9 rebounding margin. Ivory ranks 14th in the Southland with a team-high 6.7 rebounds per game, while Rashima Jenkins is just shy of the league's top 20 with 5.8 rebounds per contest.

Southeastern is holding opponents to 65.5 points and forcing 18.5 turnovers per game, while averaging 7.1 steals and 2.2 blocked shots per game. Burgess leads the team with 34 steals, while Ivory tops the squad with 21 blocks on the year.

After starting 0-2 in league play, UCA has won 10 of its 1ast 11 and three in a row. UCA freshman forward Megan Herbert led four Sugar Bears in double figures with 23 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday's 83-68 home victory over Nicholls.

Herbert has had one of the premier debut seasons by a Southland player in league history, leading the conference in scoring (21.8), rebounding (14.1), field goal percentage (55.5) and free throw percentage (82.8). The Rogers, Ark. native has had a double-double in all but one game this season, including the first 23 of her career.

Herbert is the top threat for a UCA team that averages 76.3 points per game. Herbert is joined in double figures by freshman forward Desiree Rogers (12.2 ppg) and sophomore guard Nakeia Guiden (10.1 ppg). Freshman guard Westin Taylor is just short of double figures with 9.8 points per game and second in the conference with 64 three-point field goals. Guiden paces the squad with 3.2 assists per game.

Led by Herbert, the Sugar Bears have out-rebounded opponents by a league-best 6.5 rebounds per contest. Rogers (5.8 rpg) and Taylor (5.0 rpg) have also been effective on the glass.

Opponents are scoring 63.5 points per game versus UCA. Guiden leads the team and ranks seventh in the Southland with 50 steals. Freshman guard Britney Gowans' 24 blocks also ranks her among the league leaders.

In the first meeting between the two teams, Ivory just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Kelli Jenkins chipped in 15 points. Herbert had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Guiden dished out eight assists to go with 14 points.

The Lady Lions are 4-4 versus the Sugar Bears, who joined the Southland prior to the 2006-07 season. In UCA's last trip to Hammond, Southeastern rolled to a 71-54 win behind 24 points from then-senior forward Kristy Carlin.

Following Saturday's game, the Lady Lions will hit the road, heading to Lake Charles for a 7 p.m. league contest at McNeese State on Wednesday.
