Westermann Paces Lions At Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invite

Lions battle elements in second tournament of the spring

Philipp Westermann posted his second top-five finish in as many events
AVONDALE – Freshman Philipp Westermann continued a solid start to his collegiate career, firing an even-par 72 in overcast, cold and breezy conditions to finish in a tie for fifth-place as the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Invitational concluded Tuesday at TPC Louisiana.

While Westermann posted his second top-five finish in as many tournaments, the Lions could not overcome the elements as they shot an uncharacteristic 307 and finished seventh in the 15-team field.

Westermann, who fired back-to-back rounds of 72 in Monday's opening day, finished at 216 for the tournament, nine shots behind medalist Alex Ching of San Diego and three strokes behind North Carolina State's Brad Revell.

USD, coached by Tim Mickelson (the brother of PGA veteran Phil Mickelson), claimed the tournament title after shooting a 293 to finish at 870 – three strokes ahead of first-day leader North Carolina State. UNO (878), Troy (879) and UALR (885) rounded out the top five with Wichita State (890), Southeastern (891), Liberty (895), Campbell (900) and Louisiana-Lafayette (905) rounding out the top 10.

Freshman Alvaro Arizabaleta fired a 3-over par 75 to finish at 225 for the tournament while Cedric Scotto, Horacio Leon and James Taverner each finished at 231.

Southeastern, ranked No. 47 nationally in the Golfstat rankings, will return to action March 8-9 when it competes in the 25th annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
