Southeastern Looks to Get Back on Track at JSU

Lady Lions look to snap three-game skid Monday at 7 p.m.

Rashima Jenkins leads the Lady Lions with 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to get back in the win column on Monday, when it travels to Jackson State for a 7 p.m. game at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center on the JSU campus.

Southeastern (5-3) enters the game with the home-standing Lady Tigers (1-5) having lost its last three contests. While Monday's game will not be broadcast locally, fans can keep up with the action on the Southeastern Athletics Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Lady Lions will be looking to complete a season sweep of JSU. Back on Nov. 23, Southeastern withstood a late Jackson State rally to take a 72-69 victory over the Lady Tigers.

In their latest action, Southeastern was handed an 85-51 defeat by Ole Miss on Saturday in Oxford, Miss. In the loss, Lady Lion freshman forward Aja Gibson led Southeastern with 14 goals, eight rebounds and three assists.

Senior forward Rashima Jenkins joined Gibson in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds. However, Ole Miss scored 32 points off 24 Southeastern turnovers. Freshman forward Pa'Sonna Hope led four Lady Rebels in double figures with a game-high 20 points.

Through eight games, Southeastern is averaging 67.4 points per game. Rashima Jenkins leads the team with 9.5 points per game, followed by Gibson (9.3 ppg), junior guard Latoria Holder (8.7 ppg), junior guard Kelli Jenkins (8.3 ppg) and senior guard Chelsea Hix (7.4 ppg).

Kelli Jenkins leads the team and ranks fourth in the Southland Conference with 4.6 assists per game. The Plaquemine native is ninth on the school's career assist list.

Kelli Jenkins is not the only Lady Lion making moves in the school's career record books. Hix, who currently ranks 10th in the Southland with 2.0 three-point field goals per game, ranks among the program's all-time leaders in three-point field goals made and attempted, as well as three-point field goal percentage.

Despite the recent losing skid, Southeastern continues to lead the Southland Conference with a 41.7 team field goal percentage. Gibson leads the Southland with a 56.4 field goal percentage, while Rashima Jenkins is right behind her in second, having converted 50.9 percent of her field goal attempts. Holder also ranks among the league leaders, sitting in eighth with a 46.2 field goal percentage.

Southeastern continues to lead the Southland with a plus-6.8 rebounding margin, despite being out-rebounded 47-36 by Ole Miss. Rashima Jenkins leads the team and sits in sixth in the Southland with 7.5 rebounds per game. Senior center Rachel Mackie has also added 5.0 rebounds per game.

Defensively, Southeastern has allowed 67.4 points per contest. The Lady Lions are second in the Southland with 12.0 steals per game and have also forced the third-most turnovers in the conference, averaging 22.6 turnovers forced per contest.

Holder leads the team and ranks sixth in the Southland with 2.3 steals per game. Senior guard Mary Fountain (2.3 spg, 8th) and Kelli Jenkins (1.8 spg, 14th) also rank among the Southland steals leaders. Holder also is tops on the team with six blocked shots and ranks 12th in the Southland in that category.

Southeastern will be facing a JSU team that has not played in over two weeks. In their last game, the Lady Tigers took a 62-41 road win over Southeastern's Southland Conference rival Texas State.

In the win over the Bobcats, sophomore guard Beatrice Banks came off the bench with 20 points, while sophomore guard Rachel Jones also was a key reserve, adding 13 points and seven rebounds. JSU out-rebounded Texas State, 40-30, and forced the Bobcats into 27 turnovers.

For the year, Jackson State is averaging 53.2 points per game. Junior guard Takeya Felder leads the Lady Tigers with 9.5 points per game. Sophomore forward Tiffany Kellum (9.0 ppg), Banks (8.8 ppg) and Jones (8.3 ppg) are the other top scorers for Jackson State. Jones also leads the team with 3.3 assists per game.

JSU is averaging 37.2 rebounds per game and out-rebounding opponents by a rebound per contest. Jones leads the team with 6.3 boards per outing, while Kellum is chipping in with 5.3 rebounds per game.

Defensively, Jackson State is holding opponents to 60.7 points per game and forcing 17.8 turnovers per contest. Jones leads the team with 1.8 steals per game. Kellum tops the squad with 1.5 blocks per game.

Southeastern is 4-7 all-time versus Jackson State. In the first meeting between the two teams, Kelli Jenkins led Southeastern with 14 points, seven assists and three steals, scoring the go-ahead bucket with 16 seconds left after JSU had erased a 17-point Southeastern lead.

In that game, Kelli Jenkins was joined in double figures by Holder (13 points), Gibson (11 points) and Rashima Jenkins (10 points). Southeastern forced JSU into 26 turnovers in the win. JSU was led by Felder (21 points), Kellum (19 points) and Banks (15 points).

Following Monday's game, Southeastern will close out its season-long five-game road trip on Saturday, traveling to Centenary for a 2 p.m. contest in Shreveport. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
