HUNTSVILLE, Texas - After snapping the Bearkats 10-game winning streak on Friday and claiming a series win over Sam Houston State on Saturday, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (26-17, 15-9 Southland Conference) completed a three-game sweep of the SLC-rival SHSU Bearkats (28-16, 14-10 SLC) with a 13-6 win on Sunday.

The Lions entered Sunday's series finale in a three-way tie with the Bearkats and the Texas-Arlington Mavericks, but, thanks to Southeastern's win and a UTA loss to Stephen F. Austin, the Lions now find themselves in sole posession of second place in the SLC standings.

Judging by the first three innings, it looked like the Lions and Bearkats had a pitcher's duel in store.  Southeastern right handed starter Chris Cappo faced the minimum through three innings and held the Bearkats scoreless through four.  Cappo allowed just four hits on the day to the team with the second-best batting average (.339) in the SLC, and retired ten consecutive batters at one point.

Meanwhile, the Lions struggled early on against Bearkat lefty Brent Powers.  Powers retired the first seven Lion hitters before Southeastern managed consecutive one-out base hits in the third.

The Lions finally struck first in the fourth inning as senior left fielder Brandon Street singled to center to lead off the inning.  Sophomore catcher Josh Cryer followed with a routine double-play grounder to third, but Bearkat third baseman Peter Goudeau's throw went into center field to put runners at the corners with no one out.

Junior third baseman delivered an RBI single to score Street and Cryer later came home on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Philip Freeman to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead after four.

After Cappo turned Sam Houston away with a scoreless fourth, the Lions went about expanding their lead in the fifth.

Senior second baseman 3ty Summerlin# started things with a one-out base hit.  Street followed with an RBI double and Cryer added a run-scoring single.  Cryer advanced to third on a pari of balks before comeing home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Joe Sparacino to make it 5-0 Southeastern.

Cappo ran into trouble in the fifth as the Bearkats scored a pair of runs on two hits and a hit batsmen to pull to within three and make it 5-2 after five innings of play.

Fortunately, for the Lions, Southeastern's bats came alive in the top of the sixth as the Lions recorded eight base hits and a sacrifice fly to send ten men to the plate and score six runs.  Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Lions had staked themselves to an 11-2 lead.

However, the Bearkats refused to go quietly as SHSU managed three more runs off of Cappo and senior reliever Robert Rugg in the bottom of the sixth.  Freshman right hander Josh Janway came on to record the final out of the sixth and limit the damage as the Lions headed to the seventh with an 11-5 lead.

After trading zeroes with the Bearkats in the seventh and eighth, the Lions came up with a pair of runs as senior designated hitter Jordan D'Arensbourg led off the top of the ninth by reaching third after SHSU right fielder Tyker Knight was charged with a three-base error for losing the ball in the sun.

Freeman followed with an RBI double, and sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis drove in another run by hitting a ground ball off the glove of Bearkat second baseman Braeden Riley into center field for SHSU's fourth error of the game to score Freeman and give the Lions a 13-5 lead.

Sam Houston State managed one more run off of Janway in the ninth to make it 13-6 and then loaded the bases with one out.  However, Janway induced a 5-3 double play ball with the bags full to nail down his first career save and wrap up a sweep for the Lions.

The Lions will return to action when they conclude their season-long six-game road trip at Jackson State on Tuesday night.

Southeastern will return to Hammond on Wednesday April 29 when they play host to JSU for the finale of the home-and-home series on Employee Appreciation Day at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
