SAN MARCOS, Texas – In both games of Sunday's doubleheader, the Southeastern Louisiana softball team saw defending Southland Conference regular season champion Texas State broke open close games in the fourth inning on the way to a doubleheader and series sweep of the Lady Lions at Bobcat Field.

In the opener, Texas State (18-9, 10-2 SLC) scored seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to a 10-0 victory in five innings. Senior Heather Sherrill had two hits in the opener for the Lady Lions (8-15, 0-9 SLC).

In the nightcap, Southeastern took an early lead, but the Bobcats blew the game open with a nine-run fourth inning en route to an 11-1 win in five innings. Sophomore Kelly Lyman drove in a run and sophomore Katie Duhe was 2-for-2 with a double in the loss for Southeastern.

The Lady Lions will look to bounce back on Wednesday, when they head to Grambling for a 3 p.m. contest.

Game One – Texas State 10, Southeastern Louisiana 0 (5 innings)
Texas State took a lead off Southeastern freshman Katelyn Thomason (2-2) in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Hall singled with one out, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Leah Boatright to give TSU a 1-0 lead.

Southeastern mounted a threat in its half of the second. Singles by Sherrill and Duhe put runners at first and second with one out. However, TSU starter Katie Garnett (7-4) recovered to retire junior Chelsea Takacs and freshman Lauren Coniglio to end the threat.

The Bobcats padded its lead in the bottom of the second. Chandler Hall led off the inning with a solo home run and Texas State pushed the lead to 3-0 when Jenna Emery scored on an error by Duhe.

Southeastern again threatened in the fourth. A single by Sherrill and a walk to senior Allyson McCubbins gave the Lady Lions two base runners with one out. Garnett again pitched out of a jam, retiring Duhe and Takacs.

Any hope of a Southeastern comeback was ended in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emery tripled home the inning's first run. After Thomason loaded the bases, she walked Taylor Hall to force in a second run. With two outs, Boatright cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Ryan Kos capped the inning's scoring with a two-run home run to put the Bobcats up 10-0.

Coniglio led off the fifth with a single, but Garnett retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout and enforce the mercy rule.

Game 2 – Texas State 11, Southeastern Louisiana 1 (5 innings)
Southeastern took its first lead of the series in the top of the second inning. Chandler Hall (11-4) hit Coniglio to open the frame and the LaPlace native advanced to third on a Duhe single, followed by an error by TSU shortstop Alex Newton. Lyman followed with a single to plate Coniglio and give the Lady Lions a 1-0 edge.

TSU quickly took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning. A double by Allyce Rother followed by a single by Kristina Tello put runners at second and third with one out. Newton cleared the bases with a two-run double to put the Bobcats up, 2-1.

Southeastern threatened in the top of the second inning. Duhe hit her team-high eighth double of the season with one out. However, Hall sat down Lyman and Thomason to maintain the lead.

Texas State broke open the game in the fourth off Southeastern sophomore Bailey Zievert (2-2). Tello, Newton and Taylor Hall opened the frame with consecutive singles to load the bases. McKenzie Baack plated Tello with a sacrifice fly to score the inning's first run.

A bunt single by Boatright scored Newton and Taylor Hall scored on a passed ball by sophomore Heather Grivas. Southeastern junior Jenna Yoder relieved Zievert, but two more runs came in on an error by freshman Jordan Logan. Shekia Knight followed with a two-run double and Newton capped the nine-run frame with an RBI triple to put the Bobcats ahead, 11-1.

Logan reached on a one-out single in the Southeastern half of the fifth. Elizabeth Dennis enforced the mercy rule by retiring sophomore Tamra Ladnier and freshman Meghan Gomez.
