HAMMOND – Senior shortstop Ty Summerlin went 3-for-5 with a third inning double to set a new school hits record, junior right hander Ryan Boudreaux struck out eight over 6.2 IP and senior outfielders Brandon Street and Brian McCants each drove in two runs as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (8-6, 2-2 Southland Conference) rallied for a 9-6 win over McNeese State (9-5, 2-2 Southland Conference) on Friday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
“Right now, they're the best offensive team in the conference, and I'm really happy with how we pitched and played defense against them,” head coach Jay Artigues said. “Every time they scored, our hitters responded and kept us in the game, and we were able to come up with the plays we needed to get out of trouble.”
The Lions got on the board first as RBI singles from McCants and sophomore catcher Josh Cryer staked Boudreaux to a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.
However, after a scoreless second, McNeese responded with a three run third. A solo home run by Matt Fontenot and a two run shot by Steven Irvine made it 3-2 Cowboys after two and a half.
Then in the bottom of the third, Summerlin's 211th hit sparked a Lion rally. The Vancleave, Miss. native drilled a double down the left field line to lead things off and surpass Macky Waguespack (1995-99) as the school's all-time hits king.
“I'm real proud of Ty,” Artigues said. “It's something very special to break a record like that, and it's been a pleasure to watch how he has come in and worked to be the type of player he is.”
“It feels great,” Summerlin added. “It's good to get it off my back, cause it was starting to itch at me. We were just focusing on his fastball and keeping our weight back and work on going to the opposite field and it worked for us tonight.”
The Lions were able to capitalize on putting the leadoff man in scoring position as Street plated Summerlin, who advanced to third on a wild pitch, with an RBI ground out to tie things at 3-3 after three.
Southeastern plated three more in the fifth as run scoring singles from Street and Cryer, as well as an RBI groundout from McCants gave the Lions a 6-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
McNeese responded with two runs in the sixth and one more in the top of the seventh, but the Lions retaliated with a seventh-inning RBI single from Summerlin and a Cowboy error that led to a pair of runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Senior right hander Ryan Collins came on to close things out. Collins threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief while allowing just one hit and no walks and striking out two to preserve the 9-6 win for the Lions.
The Lions will return to action for game two of this three-game weekend set against the Cowboys with a 1 p.m. first pitch tomorrow.
