Southeastern can't hang on in rubber match

HAMMOND - Junior right hander Ryan Boudreaux put together a quality start, lasting 6.1 IP while allowing just two earned runs on three hits; senior designated hitter Brandon Street extended his hitting streak to ten games dating back to last season; and senior shortstop Ty Summerlin continued his climb up the school record books. However, it wasn't enough for the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (1-2) as the Eastern Illinois Panthers (2-1) pulled away late to hand the Lions a 5-1 loss in the rubber match of the weekend's three-game set on Sunday.

After dropping Friday's opener and rallying for a win on Saturday, the Lions jumped out in front early in the series finale. Southeastern got on the board first as junior right fielder Philip Freeman singled through the right side and came around to score on an RBI double by junior first baseman Chris Ernest, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead after two.

Boudreaux started strong for Southeastern, keeping the Panthers off the board through the first three innings. The first year transfer from LSU-Eunice did not allow a hit through the first 3.0 innings, before running into trouble in the fourth.

After EIU's Zach Skidmore reached on an error, Alex Gee tied things up with an RBI double. A run-scoring single from Zach Borenstein followed as EIU went up 2-1 after four.

Boudreaux settled down once again and kept the Panthers off the board in the fifth and sixth, retiring seven in a row.

Unfortunately, for Southeastern, EIU right hander Mike Recchia also found his stride, retiring 16 consecutive batters and keeping the Lions off the board.

The Lions tried to mount a comeback as Summerlin went 1-for-4 with his 197th career hit (placing him just one hit behind Kenny Langlois for the third-most in school history) and Street led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to extend his hitting streak to ten games (dating back to May 23, 2008), but it wasn't enough as EIU added three more in the seventh for the 5-1 win.

The Lions will return to action when they visit UL-Lafayette on Wednesday. First pitch from Lafayette is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. With both men's and women's basketball in action, there will be no baseball broadcast. However, live stats will be available at www.LionSports.net.
