Red Hot Lady Lions Set to Host Millsaps

Southeastern looks for fourth straight victory

The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring Spotlight Player of the Game Gabrielle George
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will be in search of its fourth straight victory on Saturday, hosting Millsaps at 3 p.m. in the University Center.

The Lady Lions (5-5) will be looking to move above .500 for the first time this season when they host the visiting Majors (0-9), who represent Division III's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.

Sophomore guard Gabrielle George is Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Cedar Hill, Texas native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role-models Involved in the Development of Excellence).

George has worked her way into the rotation after redshirting in 2008-09. In Thursday's 100-55 win over Spring Hill, she scored a career-high nine points and hit two of Southeastern's season-high 15 three-pointers. In her season debut, George scored eight points and provided a spark off the bench at Savannah State.

George has also been one of the program's top performers in the classroom since coming to Hammond from Cedar Hill High School, where she was a three-time All-District selection. A business management major, George has consistently been on the Dean's List at Southeastern.

Southeastern posted its second straight game of shooting 50 percent or better in Thursday's win, which marked the first time the Lady Lions had posted triple digits since the 2001-02 season. Southeastern connected on 60.3 percent (38-for-63) of their field goal attempts – the highest by a Southland Conference school this season – and 57.7 percent (15-for-26) of their three-point field goal attempts.

Junior guard Chelsea Hix and her career night fueled the offensive explosion. The Canton, Ga. native scored a career-high 21 points and scorched the nets with seven three-point field goals. Hix was one of three Lady Lions in double figures, as senior wing Quantae Thomas added 18 points and freshman guard Erica Burgess chipped in with a career-high 12 points. George, junior forward Rashima Jenkins (eight points) and sophomore guard Kelli Jenkins (eight points) were just shy of double figures.

For the season, Southeastern is averaging 64.1 points per game and is 5-0 when scoring 60 points or more. Thomas leads the team with 12.2 points per game, followed by senior guard Kim Edmonson (9.2 ppg), Kelli Jenkins (8.0 ppg), senior post Zevy Ivory (7.4 ppg) and Rashima Jenkins (6.7 ppg).

The 15 three-pointers made by the Lady Lions were one off the single-game Southland Conference record. Thomas (19 3-FG), Edmonson (17 3-FG) and Hix (16 3-FG) each rank among the league leaders in three-point field goals per game, as the Lady Lions are averaging 6.9 treys per contest.

Southeastern also posted a season-high with 27 assists on Thursday. Burgess dished out a career-high seven assists, while Kelli Jenkins and Rashima Jenkins were credited with five apiece. Kelli Jenkins ranks second in the Southland with 4.3 assists per game.

Thursday also marked the fifth straight game Southeastern has outrebounded an opponent, as it finished with a 33-26 advantage on the boards behind five-rebound efforts from Ivory and Thomas. Ivory leads the team with 6.2 rebounds per contest, followed by Thomas (5.8 rpg) and Rashima Jenkins (4.4 rpg). Southeastern averages 39.4 rebounds per outing and has a plus-4.3 rebounding margin this season.

Southeastern forced SHC into 29 turnovers and posted season highs of 16 steals and six blocked shots. Ivory led the way with a career-high six steals and two blocks. Burgess nabbed a career-high four steals as well, while Edmonson and junior center Kasia Gawor were credited with two blocks.

Southeastern has held opponents to 60.7 points per game and forced 20.4 turnovers per contest this season. Burgess leads the team with 1.5 steals per game, followed by Ivory (1.4 spg), Kelli Jenkins (1.3 spg) and Hix (1.1 spg). Ivory tops the team with 0.9 blocks per contest and Gawor averages 0.8 blocks per outing.

With nine blocks this season, Ivory – the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week – is tied with former Lady Lion Dee Dee Douglas for sixth in school history with 66 career blocked shots. Hix is also among the school's career leaders with 83 three-point field goals (7th) and a 37.9 three-point field goal percentage (2nd). Edmonson needs four three-point field goals to join Hix in the top 10 and currently ranks 10th in school history with 220 three-point field goal attempts.

Southeastern will be facing a Millsaps team looking for its first win of the season. On Thursday, the Majors fell to Hendrix College, 73-47, despite a near double-double effort of 15 points and nine rebounds from freshman post Shante Morton.

Millsaps, which averages 55.5 points and 24.5 turnovers per contest, features a pair of double figure scorers in Morton (13.5 ppg) and junior guard Ronda Webb (10.1 rpg). Webb is also the team's top distributor, averaging 2.3 assists per contest.

The Majors are averaging 36.4 rebounds per contest, led by Morton and her 7.9 rebounds per game. Webb and freshman forward Deonna Walton are tied for second on the team with 6.5 boards per contest.

Defensively, Millsaps is allowing 69.9 points per game. Junior guard Pamela Jackson leads the Majors with 2.2 steals per contest, while Morton has a team-high nine blocked shots.

Southeastern and Millsaps will be meeting for only the second time. Last season, Southeastern forced Millsaps into 22 turnovers and held the Majors to a 25.5 field goal percentage in a 63-32 win. Then-senior forward Kristy Carlin notched her 1,000th career point in the win and Thomas and junior center Rachel Mackie pulled down eight rebounds apiece to help Southeastern hold a 56-37 rebounding advantage.

Following Saturday's game, Southeastern will close out its non-conference road schedule on Tuesday, facing unbeaten and fifth-ranked LSU at 7 p.m. in Baton Rouge.
