BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana freshman
Alvaro Arizabaleta fired a five-under-par 66 in the second round while veterans
James Taverner and
Cedric Scotto each posted solid performances as the Lion golf team finished in third place after the first day of the David Toms Intercollegiate on Monday at The Country Club of Louisiana.
Arizabaleta, competing in his second collegiate tournament, opened the day with a 1-over 72 before carding his best round in his brief career to finish at 138 for the day and in a tie for fourth-place.
Taverner, making his return to the Southeastern lineup after missing the second half of the 2008-09 season, overcame a 78 in the opening round before firing a 4-under 67 to finish at 145 after two rounds.
Scotto, who finished tied for 12th after 36 holes, began with 1-over 72 before posting a 3-under 68 to finish at 140. Tommy Sikes added a 2-under 69 in the opening round before shooting a 76 to finish at 145 while
Horacio Leon carded rounds of 76 and 74 to finish at 150.
Freshman
Rhys West, making his debut as an individual, fired a 2-over 73 before coming back with a 2-under 69.
Southeastern posted a team score of 289 in the opening round before shooting a 275 in the second to finish at 564 on the day. The Lions trail host LSU (558) and Kent State (561) heading into Tuesday's final round. North Florida (565), Pepperdine (566) and Ole Miss (566) rounded out the top five in the 14-team tournament that features 10 schools ranked in the Golfweek Top 75.
