SAN MARCOS, Texas – In Southeastern Louisiana's series against Texas State, the 13th time proved to be the charm.
Jasper Ducksworth scored the go-ahead touchdown in overtime and the Lions posted their first-ever win over the Bobcats when Justin Garelick's potential game-tying extra point bounced off the left upright in a wild 51-50 thriller Saturday afternoon at Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium.
Southeastern (3-2, 1-0 SLC) scored three touchdowns and converted on three 2-point conversions in the final 9:06 of regulation as the Lions overcame a 24-point fourth-quarter deficit and snapped a two-game losing streak.
“We knew that we had the ability to get back in the game, we just had to make plays and we did,” Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas said. “Our guys never quit and to come in here and get a win against a very good Texas State team means a lot to our program.”
Trailing 44-20 in the fourth quarter, Southeastern went on a 7-play, 72-yard drive as
Brian Babin avoided the Texas State rush and found
Merrick Lanaux for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 9:06 remaining in the game. The Lions went for two and Babin hit
Andre Cryer to cut the Texas State lead to 44-28.
Southeastern forced Texas State to punt on its ensuing possession and
Stephen Moreaux came up the middle and blocked Ben Follis' kick, and the Lions recovered at the Texas State 30.
Four plays later, Babin connected with
Simmie Yarborough on a 14-yard scoring pass and Babin hit
Chris Wilson on the 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 44-36 with 4:51 left.
After forcing another Bobcat punt, the Lions drove 66 yards in 10 plays. Southeastern maintained the drive on fourth-and-15 when Lanaux went up with two defenders on him and hauled in a 24-yard pass to the Texas State 1. Ducksworth scored on the next play with 34 seconds left and after a pass interference penalty by Texas State, the Lions converted their third 2-point conversion of the game when Yarborough took a pitch and scored around the left side to tie the game at 44-44.
Southeastern scored on its first possession in overtime as Babin hit Lanaux on second-and-18 with an 18-yard pass to the Texas State 2. Ducksworth, who rushed for a career-high 143 yards, scored his third touchdown of the day when he went in over right tackle and the Lions took a 51-44 lead.
Texas State scored on its first possession in overtime as George hit De'Marcus Griggs for a 7-yard pass on third-and-4 to the SLU 12 before Griggs caught a 12-yard scoring pass in the right corner of the end zone.
Garelick, who earlier missed an extra point after Karrington Bush scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter, hit the left upright and giving Southeastern its second Southland-opening win in five games.
Babin, who completed just 5 of 11 passes for 32 yards in the first half, finished 23-for-36 for 285 yards and four touchdowns. Yarborough caught seven passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions while Lanaux had six receptions for 69 yards.
Defensively,
Michael Ducksworth recorded 16 tackles for Southeastern while
Mark Newbill added 13 and
Curtis Strong 10.
Quinten Pierre returned a George interception 27 yards.
George finished 30-for-46 for 337 yards and two touchdowns for Texas State, which dropped its second straight game. Bush added 129 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for the Bobcats while Griggs caught nine passes for 102 yards.
Southeastern will return home for the first time since Sept. 10 when it hosts Sam Houston State for homecoming.
