SHREVEPORT -
Junior right side hitter Lauren Mayer hit .406 with 17 kills and freshman setter Arianne Cruckshank recorded 46 assists, but it wasn't enough for the Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team (4-6, 0-1 Southland Conference) on Tuesday night as Centenary (3-13, 0-4 Summitt League) handed the Lady Lions a 3-2 loss (25-22, 26-28, 25-15, 17-25, 15-12) in a back-and-forth five set duel.

Southeastern started strong with a 25-22 first set winner.  Mayer and sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans each had three kills and the Southeastern defense held Centenary to a 0.75 hitting percentage as the Lady Lions used an early 9-4 run to take an early lead en route to a 1-0 lead after the first.

Unfortunately, for Southeastern, Centenary rebounded in the second frame.  Neither team could get going offensively as the two squads combined to hit just .010 (23-22-96).  The Lady Lions held the advantage most of the match, leading 23-19 late in the second.  However, Centenary put together a 5-0 run to take a 24-23 lead.  Southeastern battled back by tying the score at 24-24 on a kill by Mayer, and took a 25-24 lead on a Centenary error.  But once again, after the two teams traded points in the tiebreaker, Centenary pulled away for a 28-26 win.

The Lady Lions rebounded with their best offensive set of the night in the third.  Southeastern combined to hit .481 (14-1-27) with just one attack error.  Mayer and junior right side hitter Jessica Srajer each had five kills as Southeastern rolled 25-15 in the third.

Southeastern's third set success proved to be short-lived, however, as Centenary responded with its best offensive performance of the night in the fourth.  Centenary hit .462 (14-2-26) as a squad to overcome a solid offensive effort by the Lady Lions.  Unfortunately, 11 Lady Lion errors derailed a .194 team hitting percentage (13-7-31) as Centenary forced a fifth-set tiebreaker with a 25-17 win.

Southeastern tried to put together one last rally, as Srajer, Mayer and junior middle blocker Julie Elliott each posted a pair of kills in a hard-fought set that saw seven ties, but it was Centenary who went on a 4-1 run to put things away by a final of 15-12.

The Lady Lions will return to action on Friday when they resume Southland Conference action by hosting Northwestern State at 7 p.m. at the Univeristy Center in Hammond.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. Admission is free to all fans, and live stats will be available on www.LionSports.net
