SOCCER ROLLS PAST PRAIRIE VIEW, 6-0

McDonald leads Lady Lions to convincing victory

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior Kristin McDonald scored two goals and recorded two assists to lead the Lady Lions to a 6-0 victory over Prairie View in its home non-conference finale Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions (5-1-1) out-shot Prairie View, 25-1, and dominated the match from the start. In addition to McDonald's scores, Southeastern got goals from junior Dana Mayer, freshman Kyle MacIntosh, junior Gloria Burkhart and freshman Adrienne Boasso. Sophomore Natalie Santana had two assists for the Lady Lions, while freshmen Anna Frye and Meaghan Krawczyk were also credited with assists. Prairie View fell to 1-8-1 overall with the loss.

Southeastern, which came into the match ranked third in the nation in goals per game, is now averaging an even four goals per contest. The Lady Lions are outscoring opponents, 28-5, thus far this season.

The backline of junior Shalayne Heffner, sophomore Brittany Prieto, sophomore Nicole Brannigan, senior Sarah Cheung and MacIntosh kept the Lady Panthers from mounting much of an attack. Southeastern freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus was credited with one save and posted her fifth shutout of the season, lowering her goals against average to 0.69.

“We did an excellent job today of controlling the flow of play,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “Our attack was very sharp in the first half and getting those four early goals put Prairie View in a position where they were hanging their heads going into the break.

“Natalie (Santana) gave us an outstanding performance in the central midfield,” Hornbuckle added. “She was able to win ball after ball, keep possession and get us into our attack. Kristin (McDonald) continues to be a force up top with her ability to find the net. Defensively, the play of Nicole (Brannigan) was key for us today, as she distributed the ball well and kept us on the attack.”

Southeastern opened the scoring in the match's fifth minute. McDonald rocketed a shot off the crossbar, which bounced right to Mayer, who headed it in past PVU goalkeeper Jessica Garcia for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for the Toronto, Ont. native.

Southeastern would strike again 12 minutes later. Santana flipped a pass over the Lady Panther defense, which McDonald ran down and fired a shot into the goal for a 2-0 lead.

McDonald, a native of St. Catherines, Ont., struck again less than six minutes later. Frye found her with a pass and McDonald put her second goal of the match home to stake the Lady Lions to a 3-0 advantage. The goal was the seventh of the season and 15th career score for McDonald, who now ranks eighth on the school's career goals scored list.

Southeastern capped the first half scoring in the final minute of the period. MacIntosh put a pass from Krawczyk in the net to send the Lady Lions into the break with a 4-0 lead. The goal was the third of the season for the St. Catherines, Ont. native, who was named SLC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

McDonald dished out her second assist of the game 11 minutes into the second half, finding Burkhart on a perfect cross, allowing the Cincinnati, Ohio product to power it in from short range. Burkhart's second goal of the year put Southeastern up, 5-0.

Boasso capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal. The Mandeville native corralled Santana's corner kick and knocked it in past Garcia, who finished with seven saves.

Southeastern will close out its non-conference slate on Sunday, facing Alabama State at 1 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
