SOUTHEASTERN ROLLS TO 10-0 WIN OVER SOUTHERN IN HOME OPENER

Oney, Mayer lead explosive Southeastern attack

HAMMOND – After enduring a 16-day layoff, the Southeastern women's soccer team showed little rust on Sunday, opening their home schedule with a 10-0 victory over Southern at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike forced numerous cancellations for the Lady Lions (2-0-1), but Southeastern made the most of its layoff, out-shooting Southern, 29-0, on the way to a double-digit win. Southern fell to 0-4 on the year.

Southeastern's scoring output matched the second-largest margin of victory in school history. It was the fourth time in school history Southeastern scored 10 goals or more and the first double-digit scoring output since an 11-0 win over Alcorn State on Sept. 27, 2006.

Junior midfielders Jenna Oney and Dana Mayer scored two goals apiece to lead the Southeastern attack. Senior Janae Sheldon, junior Shalayne Heffner, sophomore Natalie Santana, junior Gloria Burkhart, senior Jehan Ayap and freshman Meaghan Krawczyk all scored goals for the Lady Lions. With the ball on the Southern side of the field for the majority of the match, freshman Lacey Bockhaus earned her second shutout of the season.

Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle praised his team's effort following the win.

“We were very pleased with our execution, especially early in the match,” Hornbuckle commented. “Anytime you have a layoff as long as we have, you worry how the team will react. Our student-athletes deserve a lot of credit for handling the interruptions to our schedule with style and grace.

“Shalayne was outstanding for us today, scored a great header on a corner kick and continued to be an enforcer on the field,” Hornbuckle added. “Jenna ran the show for us today and did exactly what a central midfielder is supposed to do. Natalie did an outstanding job keeping us in the flow and Dana pressured the ball. Candice Wallace also set up several of our scores and our backfield continues to be solid.”

Southeastern wasted no time jumping to the lead, scoring 48 seconds into the match. Santana lobbed the ball over the SU defense, allowing Sheldon to settle it and drill in a goal to give Southeastern a 1-0 lead. Sheldon's first goal of the season was the fourth-fastest goal in school history and the fifth that Southeastern has scored in the first minute.

In the 10th minute, Sheldon played a perfect cross to Oney, who fired it past Lady Jaguar goalkeeper Kaylee Walthorn to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead. The goal was Oney's first of her Southeastern career.

Just past the 20-minute mark, Heffner netted her first career goal to put Southeastern on top, 3-0. Oney placed a perfect corner kick and Heffner leaped and headed it in.

Two minutes later, Santana played a perfect ball to Wallace along the right side. Wallace then fired a perfect cross to Oney, who hammered it home to push the Southeastern advantage to 4-0.

The Lady Lions only had to wait 45 seconds to add to their lead, as Santana scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway goal. Ayap found Burkhart in the final minute of the half to cap the opening period's scoring and give Southeastern a 6-0 edge going into the break.

Ayap, a Hammond native, opened the second half scoring 14 minutes into the second half, netting an unassisted goal. Krawczyk scored her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute, heading in a corner kick from Oney.

Mayer scored the Lady Lions final two goals. On the second goal, Heffner rocketed a shot off the cross bar, which bounced straight to Mayer, who scored the team's 10th goal of the match in the 89th minute. Mayer has three goals on the season, tying her with senior Kristin McDonald for the team lead.

Southeastern will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting William Carey at 4:30 p.m. The match was originally scheduled for Aug. 22, but was cancelled due to poor field conditions.
