LAFAYETTE - The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team scored two quick goals in the first 20 minutes and never looked back, rolling to a 5-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the 2008 season opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Cajuns Soccer Facility.
Senior Kristen McDonald, the 2007 Southland Conference and Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, netted two goals to lead the Southeastern attack. Junior Candice Wallace added a goal and an assist, while junior Dana Mayer and freshman Kyle MacIntosh also produced scores for the Lady Lions (1-0).
The Lady Lions out-shot Louisiana-Lafayette (0-1), 23-10, and dominated the match from the beginning. Lady Lion freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus was credited with four saves and earned a shutout in her collegiate debut. The margin of victory was the second-highest in a road match for Southeastern in school history.
“We're very pleased to begin the season with a great effort against a very good Louisiana-Lafayette team,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We came out with tremendous energy and were able to sustain that throughout the match. Three of our goals were on set pieces, so we were very pleased with our execution in that area. We had an outstanding team effort today.
“Candice (Wallace) and Dana (Mayer) were excellent on the flanks today,” Hornbuckle added. “We were also extremely proud of the effort of our entire back line, particularly (senior) Sarah (Cheung) and (sophomore) Brittany (Prieto). Lacey (Bockhaus) was very impressive in goal in her first collegiate match and came up with a great save in the first half. She made smart decisions and played like an upperclassmen today.”
Southeastern opened the scoring in the match's fifth minute. Wallace hit a corner kick, which ricocheted right back to her and allowed her to find Mayer deep in the Ragin' Cajuns' box. The junior from Toronto, Ont. headed it home to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
Less than 15 minutes later, McDonald netted her first goal of the season. After a ULL foul, McDonald drilled a penalty kick past Louisiana-Lafayette goalkeeper Stephanie Weston to stake Southeastern to a 2-0 lead. Neither team could capitalize on scoring opportunities for the rest of the period, as the Lady Lions headed into the break with a two-goal cushion.
After a quiet start to the second half, the Lady Lions exploded over the next 20 minutes. In the 64th minute, Wallace stripped a Ragin' Cajun defender, made a strong move and fired a shot in for a 3-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, Cheung played a perfectly placed free kick deep into ULL territory. Freshman Meaghan Krawczyk corralled it and found MacIntosh, who drilled it home to put the Lady Lions on top, 4-0, with her first collegiate goal.
The Lady Lions closed out the scoring in the match's 79th minute. Freshman Anna Frye played a perfect ball to McDonald. The team's top returning scorer outran the ULL defense and scored her second goal of the match to provide the final 5-0 margin.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Friday, traveling to face Troy at 3 p.m.
