McNeese State Edges Southeastern, 1-0

Lady Lions have four-match win streak snapped despite outshooting MSU, 23-10

LAKE CHARLES – McNeese State forward Kamryn Koch's goal in the 36th minute was the difference in a 1-0 Southeastern Louisiana loss in Southland Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions (10-5-1, 4-4 SLC) had its four-match winning streak snapped despite out-shooting McNeese State, 23-10. McNeese State remained undefeated in Southland Conference play, improving to 10-5-1 overall and 6-0-1 in league action.

“This was a very frustrating loss for us today,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “We did an excellent job of creating numerous opportunities, but we continue to have problems putting the ball in the net. Defensively, we did a great job for the most part against their two talented forwards. Koch got free one time, was able to finish and that was the difference.”

McNeese State broke through with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. Koch took a pass from Jordan Picou and sent it past Southeastern goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus for the match's lone score. The goal was the league-high 19th of the season for Koch.

Bockhaus finished with five saves in the loss for the Lady Lions. McNeese State goalkeeper Shelby Money recorded 10 saves in the shutout victory.

Southeastern will now need some help to make a trip to the Southland Conference Tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 6-9 in Lake Charles. The Lady Lions need to win its regular season finale at Nicholls State and have Sam Houston State lose or tie one of its remaining two matches.

Southeastern could get in with a loss or tie, depending on Sam Houston State's results. If the Lady Lions and Sam Houston State finish in a tie, the Bearkats will have the tie-breaker advantage by virtue of a 1-0 victory over Southeastern earlier this season and earn the postseason spot. Sam Houston State faces McNeese State and Lamar at home next weekend.

Southeastern will close out its regular season schedule on Sunday, facing Nicholls State at 1 p.m. in Thibodaux.
