HAMMOND -
Five Lady Lions hit .300 or better and the Southeastern defensive front tallied 7.0 total blocks as the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (8-11, 3-6 Southland Conference) helped its conference tournament aspirations with a 3-0 win over Texas-Arlington (6-16, 1-7 SLC) by scores of 25-14, 25-13, 28-26 at the University Center on Friday night.

"Coming into this match, there were a lot of small tactical things we wanted to work on," head coach Julie Langford said.  "Things like staying aggressive in our back row defense, getting efficient attacks up front and staying aggressive with our blocking were our focus in practice this week.  We worked hard on it and it paid off tonight.  This was a good win for us, there was a lot to be happy with."

The Lady Lion offense came out swinging against the Mavericks early on.  Southeastern recorded a .379 hitting percentage (14-3-29) in the opening frame and hit .406 (16-3-32) as a squad in the second as the Lady Lions took the first two sets in dominant fashion by scores of 25-14 and 25-13 respectively.

Sophomore outside hitter Kalynn Evans, who recorded nine kills with no errors on the night en route to a .450 hitting percentage (9-0-20), picked up a team-high four kills in the opening frame.

Meanwhile, junior right side hitter Jessica Srajer paced the offense with seven second set kills as part of a 14 kill night that saw the Vancouver, Wash. native rack up a .357 hitting percentage (14-4-28).

However, the Mavericks would not go quietly as UTA took an early lead in the third.  Looking to force a fourth frame, the Mavericks got out to an 11-3 lead, forcing Southeastern to work from behind.

Southeastern began to rally with four kills from Srajer and three more from Evans and junior middle blocker Julie Elliott.  After being down eight early on, the Lady Lions battled back to tie the score at 24-24.  A see-saw battle ensued with the Lady Lions battling back to tie the score again at 25-25 and 26-26 before a kill by freshman middle blocker Paige Dollison put Southeastern out in front 27-26 and a Maverick attack error gave Southeastern the 28-26 win and a 3-0 sweep.

"It was really good to see our girls battle back," Langford said.  "They didn't get down and they didn't give up and just hope to do better in the fourth set.  It's a credit to the girls for not wanting to let that set get away from them.  They really played with a lot of intensity.  That's the kind of effort we want tomorrow as we get ready for Texas State and that's the kind of effort we want the rest of the year."

The Lady Lions will return to action on Saturday when defending 2007 SLC Tournament Champion and SLC West Division leading Texas State Bobcats visit the UC.  First serve is set for 2 p.m.  Admission is free for all fans and live stats will be available at www.LionSports.net
