HAMMOND, La. – The two-time reigning Southland Conference regular season champion Southeastern Louisiana University indoor volleyball team will open the road portion of its conference schedule this weekend with a pair of matches in Texas.
SLU (10-4, 2-0 SLC) carries a five-match winning streak into this week's action, which opens with a 6 p.m. match Thursday at Lamar (7-10, 0-2 SLC). Saturday will see Southeastern travel to SFA (7-6, 2-0 SLC) for a noon match. Both of this week's matches can be seen on ESPN+.
Southeastern enters the weekend atop the Southland Conference in both hitting percentage (.241) and kills per set (13.50). Lady Lion junior
Kyra McKelvey is second in the SLC in kills per set (3.69), hitting percentage (.338) and points per set (4.09).
Alexis Logarbo (2.54 kills per set, .333) and
India Bennett (2.17 kills per set, .235) are two of the primary point producers for SLU.
Southeastern is second in the league with 11.92 assists per set, as the Lady Lion setter duo of
Ashley Richardson (6.15, 7
th) and
Peyton Stokley (5.53, 10
th) both rank among the SLC individual leaders.
SLU (2.52) and reigning Southland Defensive Player of the Week
India Bennett (1.83) both lead the Southland in blocks per set. Logarbo (0.93, 6
th) is also among the conference's top 10 in blocks, while
Lexi Gonzalez is fifth in the Southland with 4.04 digs per set.
Lamar will be looking to bounce back from three-set losses to UTRGV and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to open conference play. Maja Malinowska leads the Cardinals with 3.25 kills per set, while Kinley Elms (2.92), Taisha Rhone (2.54) and Lyric Jordan (2.37) are the other top contributors to the LU attack.
Alexa Gonzalez (5.37 assists per set) and Jo Moffitt (4.02 assists per set) have split setting duties, while Gabby Baker (4.87 digs per set) and Daniella Udegbunam (1.24 blocks per set) fuel the Lamar defense.
SFA, which hosts New Orleans Thursday, toppled reigning SLC Tournament champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV to open league play last week. Katherine Holtman (2.98) and Ilana De Assis (2.78) are the 'Jacks' kill leaders, while Jayden Flynn is the primary setter, averaging 5.86 assists per set. Caroline Kahle (3.58 digs per set) and Jordan Henderson (0.88 blocks per set) are the defensive leaders for SFA.
Following this week's trip, SLU will return home to host Northwestern State at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 in the University Center. Fans are encouraged to wear green to help Green Out the UC. Thursday's match will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 The Lion.
