BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Natalie Santana scored three minutes into overtime to give the Lady Lions a 2-1 victory over Lamar in Southland Conference women's soccer action Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.
The win was the fourth straight overall and second straight overtime victory for the Lady Lions (10-4-1, 4-3 SLC). Southeastern out-shot Lamar, 17-8, and dropped the Lady Cardinals to 2-10-1 overall and 0-5-1 in league play.
“We had plenty of opportunities tonight, but we continue to have a hard time finishing,” Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle commented. “We're very pleased with our effort to overcome adversity and find a way to come out of here with a victory against a tough Lamar team.”
Southeastern jumped on top in the 32
nd minute.
Candice Wallace hit
Janae Sheldon with a quick throw-in and Sheldon sent a perfect cross towards the net.
Jenna Oney settled Sheldon's cross and sent it past Lamar goalkeeper Jennifer Gibbs for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the third of the season for the junior from Centennial, Colo.
Lamar evened the score 12 minutes into the second half on a penalty kick. Southeastern defender
Shalayne Heffner was called for a foul in the Southeastern box, which allowed Aline Pugliesi to tie the score at 1 with a shot past
Lacey Bockhaus. Bockhaus would not allow the Lady Cardinals to find the net again, finishing with three saves in the victory.
Southeastern had several chances to end the game in regulation, but could not finish. Gibbs, who finished with six saves, made several nice stops to force an extra session.
Early in the first overtime, Lamar was called for a foul deep in their own territory to set up the winning score. Sheldon served a free kick that hit off the far post and Santana got a foot on the deflection to give Southeastern the victory.
Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday, facing McNeese State at 1 p.m. in Lake Charles.
