Lady Lions Compete at Northwestern State Saturday

SLU's defense forced 18 turnovers in the first half, but NSU's offense turned the tide in the second half

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team visited Northwestern State for a Southland Conference matchup Saturday. The Lady Demons came away with a 62-47 win in Prather Coliseum.
 
Southeastern (4-20, 3-14 in SLC) battled Northwestern State (12-12, 9-7 in SLC) to end the team's two-game road trip. After SLU forced 18 first-half turnovers, NSU recovered in the second half offensively to win the game.
 
Aliyah Collins paced SLU with 14 points, while Mia Ramos and Lihi Azouri scored 9 points apiece with both freshman guards making three triples each. Collins, Natalie Huff, and Erynn Williams swiped two steals each, helping Southeastern reach 10 steals on the day.
 
The Southland Conference's scoring leader, Vernell Atamah, continued her strong season with the Lady Demons, notching a double-double of 23 points and 17 rebounds. Tiara Abron was the only other Northwestern State player with double-digit points, getting 11 in the game. Carla Celaya posted 11 rebounds to finish second in the game.
 
The Lady Lions will return home next week for a pair of contests against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTRGV, Thursday, at 6 p.m., and Saturday, at 1 p.m. The games will be televised on ESPN+. Thursday's contest can also be heard on KSLU 90.9 The Lion, online at either www.LionSports.net/listenlive or www.LionUpRadio.org, via the following apps – Lions Gameday Experience, Live365, iHeart, Audacy, TuneIn and MyTuner Radio - or on Alexa speakers (skill must be enabled first). Thursday's game against the Islanders will be Pink Out Night. Southeastern fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for the fight against breast cancer. Saturday's contest against the Vaqueros will be Senior Day. SLU will be celebrating and honoring its seniors in Saturday's game.
