NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team closed out Southland Conference play with a 4-3 loss to Northwestern State Monday afternoon at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
Southeastern (12-8, 3-6 SLC) split the six singles matches with the host Demons, but Northwestern State (9-6, 8-0 SLC) took the doubles point and clinched the SLC regular season championship.
In doubles play, NSU earned wins on courts 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead. SLU evened it up in singles play, as
Bente Bierma (6-12, 2-6 SLC) took the opening set on No. 5, 6-1, and saw her opponent, Ayu Ishibashi, retire to knot the score at 1-1.
NSU countered with straight-set wins on courts 2,3 and 6 to clinch the match. On No. 4, SLU's
Aitana Darder (12-5, 5-3 SLC) was on the verge of splitting sets when Northwestern State's Maria Farina retired.
The match on the top singles court was decided in a third-set super tiebreaker. Southeastern's
Leana Gomez (10-9, 3-5 SLC) earned a 7-5, 2-6, 10-1 victory over Zio Spyrou to trim the final margin to 4-3.
SLU will close out the regular season Tuesday, facing Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. in Jackson, Mississippi.
