HAMMOND, La. –The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team closed out a four-match home stand with a 5-2 victory over Dillard Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU (3-1) won two of three doubles matches, then four of six singles matches on the way to its second straight dual match win.
"This was a good win for us and no match is easy," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We were familiar with Dillard having seen them several times in the fall, so we knew we were in for a tough battle."
After Dillard took an early advantage towards the doubles point with a win on court 3, SLU rallied to claim the doubles point. On No. 2,
Leana Gomez and
Aitana Darder (2-2) handled the Bleu Devil pair of Brunella Gomez and Marcelina Kotylak, 6-0. Moments later, the Lion duo of
Bente Bierma and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa (3-1) gave Southeastern a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 victory over Anja Hriblijan and Truc Tran on the top court.
Gomez (3-1) extended SLU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hriblijan on the No. 1 singles court. Darder (2-1) wrapped up her match on court 5 next, sweeping past Valentina Gomez, 6-4, 6-3.
Taisia Bolsova (3-1) clinched the win for Southeastern with a 7-5, 6-2 sweep of Messaline Ferret on court 6. On No. 4, Suanarsa was too much for Dillard's Weichiao Chen in a 6-4, 6-3 win to close out the Lions' scoring, as Dillard trimmed the final margin with three-set victories on courts 2 and 3.
Southeastern will open the road portion of its spring schedule next Saturday, traveling to Jackson State for a 1 p.m. match.
