JACKSON, Miss. –The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team opened its spring road schedule with a 4-3 victory over Jackson State Saturday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point, SLU (4-1) won four of six singles matches to extend its winning streak to three matches and drop the host Lady Tigers to 0-3 overall.
"This was our first match on the road and we just didn't look right in doubles play," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "I was really pleased with our energy in singles and the focus we showed to win the four points we needed. Tennis is a team sport and we had enough individuals show up to win the match as a team today."
In doubles play, the No. 1 SLU duo of
Bente Bierma and
Panatchakorn Suanarsa (4-1) took down Kayleigh Didderiens and Zelina Shaaban, 6-1. However, JSU answered with wins on courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Southeastern earned three straight-set victories in singles play. On court 1,
Leana Gomez (4-1) took down Paula Corbalan, 6-3, 6-4. Suanarsa (3-2) moved past Didderiens, 6-3, 6-1, on No. 4.
Aitana Darder (3-1) was too much for Jackson State's Isabela Benavides in a 6-0, 7-5 victory on court 5. On No. 3,
Claudia Di Leonardo (3-2) clinched the match for the Lions with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Zofia Dziewiecka.
SLU will return home to host Louisiana Christian Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
