Southeastern’s Comeback Falls Short Against Incarnate Word

SLU sliced UIW's lead to one point in the final minutes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team fell to Incarnate Word in SLU's Southland Conference matchup Wednesday, 66-59.
 
SLU (2-9, 1-3 in SLC) closed out its road trip against UIW (5-6, 3-1) in the final game of the calendar year. The Cardinals led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but the Lady Lions clawed back into the contest, slicing UIW's lead to one before the home team held on to its advantage.
 
Aliyah Collins had her seventh consecutive game of double-digit points Wednesday, collecting 21 points on 10-for-20 shooting. Lihi Azouri scored 16 points, making a game-high three triples. Eryn McKinzie contributed eight points as the team's third leading scorer, also leading the game in assists with five.
 
Bethany Graves led the team's rebounding efforts with.  nine boards on the day. McKinzie was not far behind that mark, reeling in eight reboundsThe Fort Worth, Texas native also totaled three steals to lead the game. Collins also posted two blocks to tie the game-leading mark.
 
Madison Cockrell led the Cardinals in scoring, notching 20 points. Raimi McCrary (16) and Londyn Oliphant (11) were UIW's other players with double-digit scoring. McCrary also had a game-high 15 rebounds to earn a double-double. Mallory McQuietor also had the team's only two blocks.
 
The Cardinals led for all of Wednesday's game, reaching a 14-point margin with just under four minutes left in the third quarter. Scores by Taylor Ross, Graves, Collins, and Mia Ramos cut the lead to six at the quarter's end. With three and a half minutes left in the game, a score by Collins reduced the lead to one, 59-58. However, the home team held the Lady Lions to only one point in the remaining minutes to earn the win.
 
SLU will return home for a two-game slate, starting with a matchup against Stephen F. Austin (8-5, 2-2 in SLC) Saturday, at 1 p.m., in the University Center. Fans can celebrate the New Year on Saturday, in SLU's game against SFA by bringing their brightest neon and glow gear. Saturday's "Light Up the New Year" game will include glowsticks, blacklights, and giveaways for fans to get in on.
