SLU Falls to HCU in Second Overtime

The Lady Lions (2-6) were led by Aliyah Collins' 29 points in Friday's loss

HOUSTON, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team competed in a hard-fought road matchup against Houston Christian University Friday, losing in second overtime, 77-70.

SLU (2-6, 1-2 in SLC) visited the Huskies (4-4, 2-0) for the team's third Southland Conference game of the season. Southeastern fell to HCU in a double-overtime contest in one of its strongest efforts of the season.

For the third straight game, Aliyah Collins led the Lady Lions' offense, scoring a career-high 29 points Friday, making four three-pointers along the way. Eryn McKinzie (15) and Natalie Huff (12) also scored in double figures for SLU.

Southeastern had one of its best rebounding games of the season Friday. Collins (11), McKinzie (10), and Aisha Marten-Coney (10) each had double-digit rebounds with the former two getting double-doubles. In the first start of her collegiate career, Marten-Coney also pitched in eight points and collected six steals.

Kamryn McLaurin also scored 29 points for the Huskies, leading the team. Jordan Jackson was the only other HCU student-athlete in double-figure scoring with 18 points. McLaurin also brought in 11 boards for a double-double.

Friday's game was a back-and-forth contest with the teams trading leads a total of seven lead changes and 12 ties. The home team Huskies finished the first quarter with a six-point lead, before a 10-0 run by the Lady Lions put SLU in the driver's seat. Southeastern held on to that lead until halftime.

After HCU got back in front in the third, they managed a lead with under a minute to go in regulation, then McKinzie made a game-tying basket to send the game to overtime. A three-point play by Collins put SLU ahead with 17 seconds left in the first overtime. Two game-tying free throws by Jackson evened the score, giving HCU the momentum to close out the game in the second overtime.
