FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team tested host Arkansas in a 68-60 loss Thursday night in Bud Walton Arena.
Southeastern (1-2) held the lead for much of the second quarter, before Arkansas (4-0) used a 28-16 third quarter to pull away. SLU outscored the hosts, 21-17, in the final quarter, but ultimately fell just short in its upset bid.
The Lady Lions had four scorers in double figures, led by
Mari Dangerfield, who shot 5-for-10 from the field with four triples for 14 points.
Natalie Huff,
Eryn McKinzie, and
Aliyah Collins had 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
On the defensive end of the floor, the Lady Lions held the Razorbacks to 24.2 percent shooting in the opening half, leading by as many as five points in the second quarter. SLU totaled five blocks in the game, with McKinzie leading the way with two.
Taylor Ross and
Bethany Graves led Southeastern with eight and seven rebounds, respectively. SLU also held SEC Freshman of the Week Bonnie Deas to two points, before she fouled out of Thursday's contest.
The Razorbacks were led in scoring by Taleyah Jones' 21 points. Arkansas' Anais Rodriguez (10) and Emily Robinson (12) were the home team's only other scorers in double figures. Rodriguez also brought in a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Lions' best stretch came in the second quarter, when SLU went on a 9-0 scoring run, beginning with back-to-back buckets by McKinzie, 13-13, then a triple by Dangerfield gave Southeastern the lead, 16-13. Two makes at the free throw line by Huff gave SLU its five-point advantage with just over four minutes left in the second quarter.
The Razorbacks managed a comeback in the following minutes, taking a 25-21 lead at halftime. The Lady Lions cut the deficit to four in the third quarter, 43-39. After Arkansas took a 12-point edge to end the third, SLU managed to get within eight to conclude the game.
