NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team closed out week three of Southland Conference play with an 83-53 victory over New Orleans in the Lakefront Arena Saturday afternoon.
Veteran guard
Alexius Horne led all scorers with 19 points to help Southeastern (12-3, 6-0 SLC) improve to 6-0 in league play over the New Orleans Privateers (0-14, 0-5 SLC). Horne gained her seventh consecutive games in double figures along with three assists, shooting 70.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from the three-point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Arianna Patton and
Allasia Washington also followed up in double digits, tied with 11 points in the road win. Patton fueled a spark for Southeastern shooting three-of-five from behind the arch, three-of-six from the field and two-of-two from the free throw line. Washington earned her third game in double figures this season, shooting 40.0 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from the stripe to produce a spark off the bench in SLU's 30-point victory over the Privateers.
The Lady Lions secured its sixth road win of the season with a dominant performance of 40 points in the paint and 34 points off turnovers. Junior guard
Jalencia Pierre (five points) showcased her playmaking ability, dishing out a season high nine assists to contribute to SLU's 19 points in transition. Southeastern controlled the first three quarters of the matchup while the Privateers could not gain enough momentum to greatly impact the deficit. SLU also obtained an edge on the boards with a 38-28 rebounding advantage.
The Lady Lions came out to a solid start, but the Privateers quickly regrouped midway in the first quarter to tie the game 8-8. Southeastern worked to spark a surge of momentum after a media timeout with three back-to-back buckets by Horne to quickly extend SLU's lead. The Lady Lions continued to regroup and take control the remainder of the quarter with a late 11-point scoring run to end with a 19-8-point advantage.
SLU entered in the second quarter quickly asserting its dominance, but New Orleans worked to chip in easy buckets in transition to cut into the deficit led by Briella Washington (13 points). Southeastern stuck to its principles with 10 points in the paint in the second quarter alone, shooting 41.2 percent from the field. The Privateers fought on the glass to stay within the game as Gabbi Cartagena (six points) remained aggressive to secure extra possessions. New Orleans gained a spark midway in the second quarter as Tre'Miyah Berry removed the lid for the Privateers from the three-point line to start-up a run. The Lady Lions weathered the storm and remained aggressive to add in easy points at the free throw line to go into halftime with the lead, 41-22.
Southeastern gained 24 points in the paint, 14 points off turnovers and 16 bench points in the first half as the Privateers could not get much going offensively.
The Lady Lions returned from the halftime break with energy to compound a 10-point scoring in the opening minutes as they shot three-of-three from the three-point line to pull ahead. As Washington led New Orleans the majority of the game, Jayla Kimbrough (seven points) came alive midway in the third quarter as the Privateers produced a scoring run of their own to pressure Southeastern. As both teams continued to go back and forth, SLU continued to extend its lead, gaining 15 points off New Orleans' seven turnovers in the third quarter alone. The Lady Lions capitalized off its advantage in the paint to finish the third quarter up 68-36.
The Privateers secured a 17-15-point edge in the final quarter of the game. New Orleans regained its aggression to go on a quick scoring run, ultimately gaining points at the charity stripe. Southeastern regained its composure to shoot 80.0 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from the stripe to secure the win, but the Privateers did not go away as it obtained nine points late in the game off the Lady Lions' eight turnovers in the fourth quarter alone.
